With all these Masterbuilt deals, a lot of recommendations have been to add the cold smoker attachment to allow prolonged smokes without refilling chips every hour or so. After pre-seasoning mine I agree it's a worthy investment. Amazon currently has a coupon on it making it $42.10 before tax. I paid about $10 more (no coupon price) and Amazon refused to price adjust. So if you're in the market for this attachment, this is likely the best current/near future price.

The cold smoker kit is only $10 more than the A-Maze-N AMNPS tray and, honestly, I think it's way worth it if you have a Masterbuilt electric smoker. About 2 or 3 years ago I gave all the adult men in my family (brother, father, stepfather, etc.) AMNPS trays as a Christmas gift with a bag of pellets. We all have MB electric smokers, and we all pretty much agree that, without some modifications, that the tray is just too difficult to get enough airflow across to keep it going in a Masterbuilt cabinet. I've had the most consistent success with it but, honestly, it's still somewhat of a pain to deal with because I have to change the internal configuration to try to get more airflow, remove the chip tray and chute, etc. and try to get some air moving through the smoker. I've followed all of A-Maze-N recommendations for Masterbuilt and the cabinet design just isn't made such that it and the tray work well together. Since I end up having to come back and check the tray every so often to make sure it's still smoking, it sort of defeats the purpose of being able to set and forget the BBQ for a few hours and know it's still getting smoke.

For the $10 extra, save yourself the trouble and get the kit that was designed to work with your actual Masterbuilt smoker. Ask anyone who has the cold smoker kit and you won't have any problems rolling the smoke to cold or hot smokes, and you won't have to deal with the inefficiencies of the airflow limitations of the Masterbuilt cabinet. You can definitely get around 6 hours or so of continuous smoke by filling the chip tray, it uses inexpensive wood chips (and some people even use pellets), and it will save you a lot of hassle versus trying to find the perfect spot in your Masterbuilt cabinet to keep that A-Maze-N tray smoking.

That being said, I like the A-Maze-N tray too. It's a quality item, it's small and portable, and you can use it with other grills you own as well. It doesn't require power, and if you purchase near a holiday they usually throw a 20% off coupon out there. Their pellets are great as well. I like the tray a lot, just not for the Masterbuilt electric smokers. Unless you need something to use in multiple grills, the cold smoker kit is absolutely worth paying the extra $10 for since the kit is down to about $45 on Amazon right now.

I always wanted one of these... and then I used a coffee can. Put an already ready to go briquette or two of charcoal in and wood chips on top. Put that in the bottom. In the water pan in the smoker, I put ice. I smoked some cheese doing that. It rocked! (I also made a "chimney" starter out of a coffee can to get the charcoal going.)

I'm eyeballing those for an alternative smoke method. I'm new to smoking and would like to get it down with chips first, but I definitely see using pellets in the future as another viable alternative. I've gotten all my chips on clearance pricing so my cost hasn't been outrageous in comparison.

Nothing wrong with trying different methods but there's not much to "get down" with a pellet tube.

You simply fill it, light it, and walk away. Time is fairly consistent on the size you buy with some variations due to humidity, air flow, and wood type.

In short, it's much easier than using chips for supplementing smoke. Plus, you can use it on your grill if you are inclined.

after talking with a few people on here and reading up on/watching youtube videos on the cold smoker, I think its a great addition to the smoker esp at this price. walmart.com has it at 53 (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Master...t/22172493) and I had a $10 back on spending $50 with an amex offer so it made it a little cheaper this way, 2 day free shipping from walmart. The other day it was 53-7.50 instore pickup but it seems to have gone down to 1.50, so not worth the 1.50 to have to drive park and walk in and deal with walmart instore pickup bs, so just went with free shipping. cant wait to break the smoker and the cold smoker in and get to smoking something this weekend!!!!

I use my old Masterbuilt electric solely as a cold smoker now with the tube smoker from them. Bacon, jerky, cheese, etc.
I modified the Masterbuilt a little to make it work better ... Drilled some more holes in the air vent and added an elbow to block wind resistance...

Works awesome!

My Amzn tray always catches on fire or at least every row of pellets start to burn overheating smoker. I have tried it many different spots and do not over fill it. I have put it on a clay brick to prevent heat transfer to it from conduction. Could just be the pellets I suppose but most other that have bought the big bag have never had issues. Pellets are CookinPellets 40PM Perfect Mix Smoking Pellets.
This looks pretty cool but chips seem expensive.

That is the concern I had for pellets (the tray not burning efficiently). Chips are definitely more costly but if bought on clearance the price difference becomes more negligible.
