Here's my tip. If you get hangry in the terminal during your stopover, go get food at the FamilyMart. It's a standard Japanese convenience store in the terminal. It's where the workers get food.

try mid-week departure dates and if you're flexible, november has the best availability.

it was trial and error for me

This is a Chinese airline, and I had better experience on one (ORD-SIN) than on any U.S. airline.

Ditto. Hainan Airlines RT Chicago to Beijing last spring. 787 Dreamliner, lots of room in coach, phenomenal service. Better BY FAR than any American airline.

I've read nothing but horror stories about China Eastern, but hey - if you want to just fly cheap, this seems like the best deal you'll ever get.

Hainan is a well regarded airline. It's basically a Singapore Air or Asiana in the making.

Then I guess you aren't very well read. Head over to Skytraxx and you'll read more horror stores about United or American than CE.

Doesn't work for SFO. ~$700 to HKG or TPE.
