You potentially end up paying Comcast $300 plus for a cable modem that would have cost you $50. In addition to that, Comcast can turn a portion of your internet into their roaming wifi for other customers to use as a hot spot. The Comcast "hotspot" you see poping up throughout the city are from rental cable modems.

With your own modem/router, Comcast can't do this. Never rent from those crooks.

In most cases you have to pay for the one provided so over time it's cheaper. Generally the provided ones also have a router too which can be flakey sometimes

I had this cable modem -- worked great with Cox.

I bought mine used on CL for $40 and ended up reselling it a year later for the same price

This may be a really dumb question but what are the perks of owning your own modem over just using the providers one?

Will this work with Comcast? They provide a gateway that's a combo of modem + router. I know that I have not made right decision in the past and I have been renting their equipment for the past 5 years. Any issues they fix it. No fee. But now I want to buy my own modem + router that will be reliable for few years. Any recommendations? I am moving to my own home from rental this month and it is 2800 sq ft.

Iove this modem. I haven't had one issue yet. Bought it a month ago and the kid actually price matched the wrong item and sold it to me for $22 at Best Buy. Not even sure what he was looking at.

This is a modem only, so you'll need a router as well, but yes it will work.
