This is an old version. GPS connectivity might be pretty poor.

The Amazon page does note "there is a newer model here..." which of course is a ~$130 watch. The GPS is going on my phone, so for $50 I might bite on this one.

Anyone know what types of HRMs it connects to? Seems there are a couple different types of straps that aren't all compatible with each other.

Not sure this is true (sure it may connect quicker). I have a very old New Balance GPS watch, never an issue with GPS connections.

I get up to run in the morning and as I am throwing on the clothes, turn on the GPS (and place next to the window) for connectivity. Usually ready to go once I step outside.

Decent watch but it is no garmin. The cardio version is better. Also probably better off getting a newer version unless you only have $50 to spend. For $50 it is very good value. You are unlikely to find a new alternative for $50 that is as good as this.

3.5 Starts means that this device is solid. I always look for 3+ stars reviews. At least I can see some honest feedback. Lot of items have 4+ or 5 stars and quality is not adequate.

Best Buy has the Spark, which is the newer model, but not the newest (Runner 2 = Spark, Runner 3 = Spark 2) for $10 more.

Sorry, but not on name brand products.

The highly rated Garmin Forerunner 230 has 4.5 stars - https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-For...runner+230

In this space with name brand stuff, 3.5 stars means there's issues of some sort. Could be software issues or physical design issues. That said, it's only fifty bucks.

Thanks OP. My first runner's gps watch. Got 40$ Amazon credit after that Panasonic lumix cancellation. So if not happy with this after 29 days, this goes back to their return center.

I have the multi sport version of this and it's pretty crappy. GPS signal isn't bad if you're always starting from the same place. It took me like 20 mins to barely connect when I was traveling with it. Battery life is mediocre. For awhile they were having a lot of software issues with the updates being buggy and I needed up losing a few workouts. Transfer via BT to upload on the your phone app is slow and spotty, also if it fails you could lose your data. Save your money for a Garmin.
