It performs better than i7-6700HQ by 5%

No, actually quite a bit weaker than 1060, but this has G-sync so you can actually make use of the graphics.

Shouldn't laptops with these specs be running new around the same price, maybe just slightly higher? This doesn't seem like the best deal being a refurb...but then again, I'm sure it could appeal to someone.

How "obsolete" is the processor. Is 4th gen a dramatic difference from 6/7th?

I owned this laptop earlier in the year and just sold it for $1200. I'd say this deal is pretty slick. The GPU is still pretty nice and the G-sync looks amazing (75 Hz though.)

I sold it because it got very tiring lugging it around. I went with a OLED Alienware 13 with GTX 1060 and never looked back. (Got it for about the same price off SD front page back in Feb or Mar.)

For the price, this is really a good deal. For Gaming, it is still good enough and beat all the GTX 1050 Ti laptops available at this price point + G-Sync. Also it is pretty good for Productivity purposes as well because of very powerful Processor, huge ram and 512GB SSD. Also Thunderbolt 2 will let you add multiple 4K displays, Tons of Docking accessories.

Just don't bother if you want to game on battery--the older generation CPUs and GPUs are much, much less power efficient and G-Sync keeps the 980m running at all times, so battery life will be non-existent and the clocks will certainly be hard-underclocked. (And, yes, there are people who buy portable gaming machines to use them portably.)

I have this laptop. Overall, its a great laptop except for one thing. The battery connector has a high failure rate of staying on. I think the heat pushes it back a bit so it doesn't read right. I had to take this laptop apart a few times due to that reason. After a while you get it down to a 10-15 minute job to remove the bottom screws and the keyboard tray. If its not the connector you have to hold the power button down for a minute and turn it back on to recalibrate the battery or remove the monitor to take the battery out at that point.
