I was reading more about whether I need to dethatch and found this discussing useful:

https://www.lawnsite.com/threads/aerating-vs-dethatching-need-some-help.466648/

In summary, dethtatching can do more harm than good for many lawns, and aeration should be done more often.

Bought this last time. Works great. Buy the proper cord to prevent overheating.

The dual use dethatcher/scarifier has been down to close to $90 a few times.

It's running $125 right now but I imagine there may be price drops late fall into winter. Got mine for $94 and if you think you need the double duty a wait may be worthwhile.

I'm always afraid to aerate, because I have sprinkler hoses underground.

I bought this a few years ago, and don't usually it more than once every two years or more... So weigh that into your decision to buy this. It takes up room. But it's so so much faster than the hand dethatcher.

For those with a riding mower and a Menards nearby, you can rent the tow behind type dethatcher for $15 per 4 hours. Researched earlier this spring and decided to go that route this fall. Running out of space to store infrequently used stuff, so glad there are rental options out there.

Yeah I think I'm going to pass on this because I wouldn't dethatch often and it takes up storage space. Reading more, I'm going to hire someone to core aerate.

Your sprinkler hoses should be at least 12 inches deep if it was installed professionally, so you shouldn't have to worry about hitting the lines if you aerated.
