What is your budget and how large is your room? If you can go to $300, I would pick the Emotiva BasX S10

Room is 17 *14 all sides closed. Budget is ideally $200. I did pickup the Polk at Frys on Sunday but not opened it yet. Was looking at a SVS on CL but nothing less than 400 in DFW area.

A good sub might be the Emotiva BasX S8. It's a 8" sub, but plays a lot more than you'd think - more than many 10" subs. It's $200. You can also call them up to see if they have any B Stock S10's as that honestly is going to be better than all the subs mentioned.

However the BIC-PL is a pretty decent sub, but from that link the new version of it is $329. If you really want to stick with with the $200 price point, my pick would be (depending on how powerful you like your sub) other than the BasX S8, the Jamo J-110 which you can get on eBay for $179 (shopdivvy is the seller). It's the same thing as the Klipsch R-110SW as Klipsch owns Jamo.

I'm adding in a couple more that are good. The BIC F12 is a decent sub and it's $220. If you have the room for it, the Dayton 15" sub is also $200 - all from partsexpress.

If you are looking for quality, the BasX S8 will be the best, but for sheer power, the Dayton 15" sub will be better or the Bic F12

Thanks. The amazon price increased for the BIC but they still have it on ebay for $250. I am still hoping some 20% coupon will come up Smilie I researched the Jamo but avs forums did not have good reviews on it compared to the BIC Pl200 or even the F12. The Dayton 12 and 15 gets great reviews for the "thump" but folks say cannot get to the lower frequencies. Which of the above do you think does the lower frequencies the best. I know a $200 sub can't do 20-23 but still? This is what Basx site says "The BasX uses a heavy-duty long-throw 8" driver and an efficient 150 watt Class D amplifier to deliver bass response down to 28 Hz."
When you say quality, is that lower frequencies, overall boom, build/warranty...?

By quality I mean clean sounding bass plus that it can extend lower. From those, the BasX S8 will extend the lowest. The specs might claim otherwise but Emotiva has been tested and they show their graph of the frequency extension. They don't fudge their numbers. The Bic PL for example was shown to drop off considerably after 35hz. It depends if you want more power in the 40 hz range or more extension. The other subs will be louder, the BasX will be loud, maybe not as loud as the others but it will play lower and sound better/tighter

size matters, you are always going to be limited with these smaller subs. its about displacement.

of course there are crap subs that are bigger. not saying bigger is always better.

I have the Pioneer/Andrew Jones 5.1 set. Would this be a suitable replacement for the included stock Pioneer sub?

(vs, say, the BIC PL-200, BIC F12, or Dayton SUB-1500)

I really like all the speakers in this JBL series, but I've never heard the sub. If you're really looking at getting the best performance per dollar and aren't afraid to cut some wood, DIY is always the best option.

I picked up the Polk PSW505 a few weeks ago and was in your budget as well, very happy with it. Instead of moving my subwoofer budget up, which people always suggest when you give a price range, I moved some of my subwoofer budget to having better fronts. IMO subs in this price range won't give you a big difference (if you're looking at good models that is) when compared to left, right and center speakers upgrades.
