I got the SPG card earlier this year and the benefit is that they include like 5 free nights right off the bat (dont quote me on that number).

In addition to those nights, I've stayed a few more times and I'm actually at 9 nights currently.

So what is the challenge? And how long will I have the Gold status. Will I only have it for 3 months? Is this available at all times?

Thanks gals/guys

Those 5 nights don't count for the challenge. You get Preferred Plus with the card which is basically Gold minus the Gold bonus on points.

No, this is NOT an immediate status match, like Marriott has. The title should be Status Challenge, as you need to finish the challenge before you gain Gold or Platinum.

You will keep your existing status level, and when you complete the challenge you will be granted that new status level. If you request it now, I believe it will be granted until February 2019 (July has usually been the rollover).

3 months is the limit to complete the challenge, but if you stay 9 or 18 nights in 2 months, once you reach those 18 nights you get status.

If you have 9 night so far, you can request to start your challenge as of July (one month before your current one), so you can optimally choose a 3-month time period that will encompass those dates. If you have 9 nights spread out over the past 7 months... those don't count.

A lot tougher to get status than it used to be. At one time, I was Hilton Gold, Hyatt Diamond, Marriott Gold and SPG Platinum with very few stays (outside of Priceline). They tightened things up over the last 5 years. Their benefits have gone downhill at the same time.

This is all laid out in the terms and conditions - https://www.spgpromos.com/statuschallenge/terms

If a member is upgraded via the challenge on or before February 28th, 2017, they retain status until February 28, 2018, the following year. If they are upgraded on or after March 1, 2017, they retain status for the remainder of the year, all of 2018, up until February 28, 2019.

To be fair, it hasn't been a match in several years. I did it myself back in 2012, and that was a Challenge.

Easier to do 30k spend on an SPG to reach gold IMHO. Not that I use good for SPG, moreso for the match to Marriott Gold which is actually worth it.
