For $4 with $1 shipping credit it's worth a shot to replace my wife's car's terrible bluetooth mic. Even with her windows closed and the AC off there's so much white noise it sounds like she's in a hurricane.

Kudos for aptX - its a must in such devices today. But power cable permanently attached to the 12V adapter is a major fail.

The world is still waiting for someone in China to finally pull their head out of their arses and build a device with its own internal gain adjustment, independently for voice (HFP) and music (A2DP). That would sell like crazy.

Does this only allow for making phone calls or for music playback over Bluetooth as well?

It says its for making calls and playing music. So yes and yes.

"The unit wirelessly connects to your Bluetooth-enabled phone, tablet, or other device, allowing phone calls and music to be routed to your car's speaker system, while the dashboard-mounted receiver's built-in microphone allows for safe, hands-free talking."

You need to get a white noise filter, a new Bluetooth receiver won't fix the problem. I have several of these filters for my car, computer, projector, etc. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0...ref=plSrch
