Would have been nice if Kindle Unlimited isn't such a disappointment.

Most major publishers are going to avoid putting their books on KU, but I've still found more than enough books to read on it to justify the price I paid, especially at the discounted price.

FYI, close but not as good as the $80 12-month rate that Amazon usually offers Prime members on Black Friday and Prime Day.

I buy this for my MIL every time her subscription expires and she loves having a "library" that she doesn't have to go to physically. Frankly, I've never seen her acclimate to a piece of technology quite like the Kindle. It's like she realized she'd better figure it out cuz she really wants to use it. Score!

Nice son-in-law. At least she got something for marrying her daughter off.

you should look into OverDrive - it's supported by most libraries and allows you to electronically checkout library books to get access to content not available on KU etc.
The books secured via Overdrive can sync it up with Kindle also -- did it w/ my kindle paperwhite reader

https://www.overdrive.com/

see if your local library is supported - https://www.overdrive.com/libraries

I'd use Overdrive, but I can't get my MIL to use the requisite apps or web browser to set it up. She has never used a computer and she didn't even have WiFi until she moved in with us. Her first Kindle had 3G connectivity which works great for small files like ebooks and for those w/o internet access. I'm still amazed she dove in and learned how to use it. She barely knows how to use the microwave and TV, but can't be bothered with the DVR. I give Amazon credit for the Kindle ecosystem because of how it serves the technophobic population.

She got her daughter's worth, if you want to put it that way. MIL is now my roommate, which saves my wife considerable stress not worrying about her elderly mom 1k miles away. My wife has a demanding career; more family stress was not going to be helpful.

An extra $4 over a 12-month period don't make a material diffrence in my book. To me, if it's not worth $84, it's not worth $80 either.

My inherent point was Black Friday is (relatively) around the corner. Unless you need this subscription before then, it will more than likely be offered at the lowest previous price of $80/yr. Not thread crapping; this deal is just fine because I concur, who cares about $4 when push comes to shove.

Yeah, exactly. Not waiting for BF to save $4. And not wasting time on marginal savings on the busiest shopping day of the year. laugh out loud
