I think the harshest criticism has been of the updated sprites in the 2D games, which seem to earn a lot of near-unanimous hate. The games are still fun, though they're the newer translations which could be good or bad depending on your view (I personally miss the charm and personality of Woolsey's FFVI localization, but as always YMMV).

I think FFIV is the best update, but FFVI is the best overall game. FFIII is cute, but the job system in FFV is leagues better.

The first two are rather hard, and are probably for completionists only. The After Years is pure fanservice, so only get it if you seriously can't get enough of the FFIV universe.

If you've never played any of them, I recommend FFVI, because even imperfect FFVI is better than no FFVI. But if you've already played it, you might seriously hate the sprites.

Hope that was vaguely helpful. Big Grin

Ff3 and ff6 are good games. But be aware that these are 32 bit apps. iOS is moving to 64 bit and won't support 32 bit apps. It's up to square to update apps.

Damn FF9 not included in this... was trying to buy it this past weekend.

I haven't heard the greatest things about these games and their mobile port versions. Any of them that you guys recommend?

Thanks... I'll probably hold off then, since I do plan on upgrading to an iPhone 8 with iOS 11 installed.

The After Years & FFV were both already updated to 64 bit so I can't imagine that Square Enix won't update the rest of its catalog, but I've seen stranger things happen.

They also stated last week that they're updating FFT.
Do these play well on iOS though?

Thank you! So many great retro games on iOS that don't work on Apple TV. Seams like huge market Apple is missing. Especially with the crazy success of Nintendo's NES Classic, it's obvious people want to play old-school games on their big screens.

BTW, from this group FFIV and VI are the best IMO.

Same with many others - IV and VI are the best.

I is worth playing once just to say you've played the grandfather of all FFs and see what grind-fest RPGs were back in the day.

II I like for its soundtrack and gameplay. It is very politic-heavy, kind of like XII in that sense. Characters don't have levels - their stats grow depending on how you use them - take hits, gain HP, use weapons, gain attack, etc. So it's a very enjoyable grind-fest where you have total freedom on how to use your characters.

III was underwhelming IMO. You have to grind to change jobs but it's not as fun or flexible.

V was a great game but falls a tad short compared to IV and VI.

This is incorrect. The version release notes in the App store for FF 3-6 all note 64 bit support being added around 2015. They do not for 1 or 2 however.
