Amazon No Longer Giving 20% Discount on Newly Released Games

0 Deal Score

This isn't so much a hot deal as it is a bit of a hot mess. It appears that Amazon is no longer offering a 20% discount on games within the first 2 weeks of their release. It now applies to preorders only. This can be checked by looking at any games that were released in that time frame. I've attached a screenshot of Agents of Mayhem as an example. This follows Amazon Canada's decision to cut their Prime member discount to 10% across the board. So maybe the Hot Deal is going with Best Buy's GCU if you care a lot about this, and waiting for Walmart to answer with their own program.

If the price of Prime gets lowered, I could care less about the 20% off games.

I always thought it was only for pre-orders.

Nah. Up until now, it was within two weeks as well.

But the price of prime isn't being lowered, and likely to go up.

Anybody that can wait 2 weeks for a game can wait another month and it will likely be even greater than 20 percent off at that point. If you cant wait then just preorder it and get the 20 percent as per usual. This is a non issue for the majority.

I think the bigger point is you would want to wait for reviews to hit (which is typically around the time Amazon ships your game) before buying the game, rather than spending the money, getting it, and regretting the purchase afterward.

must have changed recently as I purchased a game about 2 weeks ago and still received the preorder price even after a couple of days of release.

The discount was eliminated today. Yesterday I was able to get newly released games at 20% off and today I cannot. I contacted them and they wouldn't address it; instead telling me that I can get a $75 credit for using a Discover card or a $50 credit if I applied for a Visa.

So what. Buy the game ans resell for $45 if you don't like it. Will be able to get better resale value on Amazon if it isn't discounted after release. Same result.

That doesn't make a lot of sense. You're betting on a chance and losing $15 as a result. And I gave you a sensible reason why people would want to wait a week or so.

I know you mean this in jest, but hey, I think it's still worth pointing out this significant (depending on the person) change to their service. It's something people should take into consideration if they use Prime mostly for video games. And I mentioned GCU for a reason in the original post. =)

Makes a lot of sense whether you understand it or not. People will still buy it from you at $45 to get a new game even if reviews are less than stellar. You thus easily recoop your purchase and at most lose 5 dollars or so (the price of a game rental).
