It's been as low as $200. Not an impressive deal unless you need one immediately.

Same price at Lowes. Any 'coupins' at Lowes to sweeten the deal. $189 is when I bite.

Would this be too powerful for a 1 car garage?

No such thing as too powerful.

The 1 1/4 hp motor is NOT what lifts your garage door. It will work for any door, single or double.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who has installed garage doors and openers for years. He has told me on numerous occasions to stay away from Chamberlain openers. He prefers Liftmaster units and recommended to 8550w model. Slightly more expensive than this deal but much better quality according to him.

Find a new friend. Chamberlain and Lift Master are the same company. Chamberlain is sold through big box stores. Lift Master can only be purchased with installation from a garage door store. Of course he would say that as it keeps him in business. The only difference I can see is that a chamberlain has a 3 piece rail for packaging purpose where LM is a one piece rail. Having had both brands and 1 pc vs 3 pc... I cannot tell a difference and have had both last decades.

Lastly, understand what you are saying. A garage door opener does lift your door. If I dont have an opener it does not magically open. What I think you wanted to say is the door springs do most of the work, the opener assists them. If you have springs that are out of tension or have really heavy solid doors, you need a bigger motor. If you can lift a door with your ring finger, you can get by with 1/2 hp unit.
