Sony MDR1000X/B noise-cancelling headphones ($298 on Amazon; $299.99 on Best Buy)

Posted 08-20-2017 by jman77 at 05:19 AM
Both Amazon and Best Buy have the Sony MDR1000X/B on sale for $298 and $299.99, respectively. Lowest price I've seen on these sites (MSRP is $399 and previous low price I saw was around $330). There are some concerns about the headband durability, but at this price I might just bite.

Best Buy: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony...Id=5581069

Note: If you don't want to pay tax, there are other buying options on Amazon that are tax-free (back-ordered for a few days; sold by reputable sellers and fulfilled by Amazon).

Love these headphones. I love the Swipe controls on the left ear and ability to hear the environment by cupping the ear temporarily.

Isn't it swipe/cup on the right? Smilie

btw, I use these every day and these cans are amazing.

Bought em open box last time at Buydig for a great price with an intent to resell, but I was sold on these and am actually using them...

I'm hoping to stack these with Best buy coupons/discounts to make it lower, any ideas?

Amex Bestbuy offer (spend 300 get 30 back), if you have.

Not sure if these headphones are listed in the exclusions for the BB coupons (the Bose and Sennheiser equivalents are), but in case they are, you could always try to get a sales associate to scan them in store. I've had some success with this in the past. Sometimes, it requires an override. Sometimes, the associate said scanned it, said there was no way to apply the coupon, but the 10% discount showed up on my receipt anyway. YMMV, of course.

Edit: I don't see the Sony headphones in the list of exclusions in the 10% coupon I received from BB this month. It only excluded Sony home audio, cameras, TV's, Bluray players and projectors. Whether they will stack it on top of the existing discount is subject to the YMMV qualifier per my post above.

Make sure to get serial number outside of 5000001-5256984 to avoid potential handband crack.

Just got these a few weeks ago from eBay as a refurb - so far the noise cancelling performance is fantastic. The audio quality for podcasts is great, and for music I find them to be at least as good as the Bose qc35. At this price for new - it seems like a pretty good purchase if you want top of the line performance for noice canceling. I use them at work in an office space and it really toned down all the noice around. This does incredibly well for ambient sounds, but less so for voices. Voices are definitely quieter but they are still audible. Another feature I like is the ability to place your hand over the right headphone and it actually pushes ambient sound from the environment through the speakers. This is really great if you need to quickly listen for something around you.

Bought these refurbished, everything was very nice - sound, comfort, etc. - but kept hearing kind of a cracking noise everytime I turned my head or moved my jaw. I sinced found many reports of this "creaking" online. I returned the sony. Except for this, I would have definitely kept them.
