Came here to say the same thing. My local water district has a $100 rebate on smart controllers. It reduces my water by about 30% in the summer and the lawn looks great.

Plus, I get to feel superior to all my neighbors when their sprinklers are going off during a rainstorm look around

One thing is that you don't report to their systems to make intelligent decisions. If rachio ever goes under, all their devices loose smart technology.

Is this technology better or worse than the rain sensor you install outside?

Not sure if trust stuff relying on my wifi all the time.

Since its weather aware, it shouldn't water your lawn when it's raining.

Also if it is going to rain, or rained significantly in the recent past (yesterday) it will reduce or stop the time for zones to run.
