FreedomPop LTE Upgrade SIM $.99

"FreedomPop is moving to its newer faster LTE network. In order to ensure you get up to 5x your current speeds, and ensure ongoing reliability, we urge you to upgrade your old SIM now.

Get a free upgraded SIM and new line today."

When you click the link on the email they sent out, it says there is a $.99 activation fee.

What I am not understanding is it says "new line"? That usually means a number change, not just a change in SIM?

They are still offering the free basic plan, 200 minutes, 500 text, and 200MB data.

I use mine in an old S5 phone and I only use it to get calls, not to call out. Since I know FreedomPop monitors SlickDeals, I hope they will find this thread and provided some information on this upgrade and why a "new line"?

My current SIM is the "Global" SIM and in fact, I have a second, unused one. I am sure there are others on here who know more about these FP options and can help me and others understand if this offer should be taken advantage of, or if it offers no value. I only use the phone for voice, no data, do I need or want LTE? I am guessing the LTE service is AT&T?

I found no other posts on this offer so I hope this is a new deal.

Thanks

SO ... what is actually going on?! (A recurrent question with FreedomPop.)

1) You can keep your existing Global SIM. You do not need to do this "upgrade" at this time. The service quality may change:
Quote from FreedomPop
:
We can confirm that our Global SIM cards will be transitioning from our current 3G network provider to a top nationwide GSM network provider. Coverage should not be significantly impacted, but as it is a different network, some users may experience reduced speeds/connectivity. For this reason, we have created an exclusive low price offer for those who would like to upgrade to our Nationwide LTE SIM.
2) The "upgrade" offer is essentially just the standard 4G LTE SIM offer at 99 cents. If you want to use your existing number on the new SIM, you will need to transfer it to the new SIM.
Quote from FreedomPop
:
A number transfer is free! Anyone who would like a number transfer can feel free to PM us here to get this done!
More info below in the wiki.

3) FP has capped the ability to add extra data at a total of 500MB from friends or sharing. In practice, that means that if you have 10 friends, you get the maximum and don't gain by sharing. So if you have multiple SIMs just to get more data by sharing, it is probably time to rethink your approach.

4) Many users are reporting a new 1 cent account maintenance fee on their 4G LTE accounts.

Bad deal to upgrade. If you want LTE, better to just wait for new standalone 99c LTE deal to come along.

I'm planning to keep mine since LTE sim don't have global roaming usage.

do they use T-Mobile or AT&T network these days?

I had FreedomPop last year, but had to stop using it because they only run on T-Mobile network in my area, according to the tech support. T-Mobile signal is extremely bad in my town. Many places have 0 bars. AT&T, on the other hand, are always 4 or 5 bars and I usually get about 30mbps down and 10mbps up(with my Tracfone AT&T SIM card).

The LTE is typically AT&T while the "no longer available" Global SIM from Freedompop site is T-mobile.

glad I waited for some experts to chime in. I didn't upgrade yet since you have to unsubscribe from the sneaky trials again. Email alert made it sound like my current one (Tmobile?) would no longer work.

yeah, I had the Global SIM last year... which explains why it was on T-Mobile.

I guess I'll give their LTE SIM a try once they have those SIM cards on sale for 99-cent again.

Thanks for your help! Smilie

At some point, they may actually stop working depending on the T-mobile agreement. Just like the WiMax Hotspots stopped working as that was phased out.

For those considering upgrading or even getting LTE sim, you should take into account much longer latency from UK servers on Global SIM vs US Servers for AT&T SIMs.

So for some, there is a benefit for Data only use.

T-Mobile is shutting down their 3G network which the global sim uses.

This was true for a while, but earlier last year they switched to AT&T only, even for global sim. The tmobile thing is really......... really old.

BEWARE: those downgrading are now charged $5 to do so. In the past, ONLY IF, you disabled top-up, you were charged $5. Now simply downgrading any trial plan results in $5 (Auto-top or not)
