is there something special about these boards? They look super entry level and from a brand that i dont think is popular.

Server hardware OEM. Stable and reliable. Not sure about their desktop boards, but I'm guessing it's more of the same.

Same price for like 2 weeks now. Also chances are that these will need a BIOS update (and thus a doner skylake chip) to get it Kaby Lake compatible. I hear that bios updates are a major pain too. And also that the first two DIMM slots are too close together (unlike the rest of the spacing) which makes some ram sticks with bigger heatspreads not fit.

What is lost by going with a quality motherboard like this vs. one of the newer Z270 based boards to save some money? Processor options are the same between these generations correct?

According to some user reviews, these boards do not support SLI so buy with caution if you intend to use a multi-cpu setup.
