Samsung Note 8 - Trade In Deal for Note 7 Users - $450 off

Moderator note: A lot of users are reporting this as dead. But other users have said that (after being on hold for forever) they talked to a rep that says the site is having issues and will be fixed by tomorrow/Monday 9/25. Given that the promotion is *supposed* to last until 9/30 and given the mixed 'dead/not dead trade-in link is just broken' posts, we'll leave this in HD until Monday in case it really is just a site glitch. If it's not working by Monday evening, please report it expired and then it can be moved to Deal Talk at that time.
Given the reports of dead though, I'd highly suggest either waiting to see if the site is working properly on Monday or call in to talk to a Samsung rep (but expect looong wait times if you do).

If you suffered through the Note 7 nightmare, Samsung is trying to make it right.

If you order through their website, you can trade in a working smart phone (S5, LG G4, iPhone 5, iPhone SE are the best deal here) to get $425 dollars off your Note 8.

TMobile has the cheapest base price thus my lower price. You should be able to replicate with other providers or unlocked for a few bucks more.

You will also get the promo for the free Samsung 360 camera, or the extra memory and wireless charger.

Link: (updated to work) http://www.samsung.com/us/galaxy/...s/tradein/

Verification of note7 purchase might be necessary.
Free Shipping.

complete list of phones eligible:

Galaxy S5, S6, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, S7 edge, Note 5
iPhone SE, 5, 5s, 6, 6+, 6s, 6s+, 7, 7+
Pixel, Pixel XL, LG G4, G5, G6, V20

edit: Unidays gives an additional 25$ off of checkout at cart

I have a confirmed order, used the unidays for $25 off, paid 512.73 including taxes (NJ)

How to Activate a Special Offer for Former Note 7 Owners

MyMiMix, Thank you for the link: Note 7 Promo [samsung.com]

IF you have a real RECEIPT, you do not need to beg for an email!!!! Just upload your receipt... with whatever email account that is not blacklisted and you will be approved for upgrade... just use one email per phone.

You will then get an email that says, "Thanks, we've received your registration for the Special Opportunity for Former Note7 Owners! Upon review of your information, we'll send you an email containing additional details in regards to your submission status."
Most people have gotten confirmation within 48 hours.

If approved (may take a few days), you will be sent another email that says, "Congratulations! Your proof of purchase has been validated. You will receive an additional email within approximately 1-2 weeks with a link to purchase your new Galaxy Note8."

Sit back and wait for the special link, which is associated with the email you used to upload the receipt. This link--without the email--can't be "transferred" to another person; the person will need the link AND the email address. When you're ready to pull the trigger, click the special link. You may be prompted to re-enter the email you used.

Note: Your purchase does not have to be completed from the link you used to get the promo link. Once the promo is triggered and you are taken to your cart, you can log into any Samsung account to finalize the deal.

Once your phone ships and is delivered, a label for the trade-in will appear on your Samsung order page. Print it from there. Many people are also getting a trade-in email with the label attached. The email arrives 2-3 days after delivery of the phone.

See below in the wiki for more information on the trade in, including available options for a cheap Iphone to trade in and other information about what to include in the trade-in box.

DO NOT ask for a valid Note 7 upgrade link, email or receipt. Most people with these aren't lurking, waiting for people to ask for one. They are making posts announcing they have one in exchange for a gift card. When this happens, PM that person quickly and work out a deal. If someone says they have a link and says, "PM me," don't respond with "I want one. PM me." Make it easy on the sellers... PM them. Asking for a link clutters up the thread. If you are requesting the promo, please keep in mind the trade rules here: Trade Rules. Gift card amounts must be specified, and must be $5 or under.

Unidays and Cash Back

Unidays is a site that offers discounts to students at places like Samsung and other online stores. For Samsung, the offer is "up to" 20% depending on the product purchased. You need a student email to sign up (edu email address). If you don't have one, you can purchase one online (Ebay) for around $2.50. Make sure the seller offers Unidays compatible/eligible edu emails. Once you register with Unidays, simply visit the site and click through to Samsung. The Note 8 currently has a $25 discount from Unidays. Some users report that Unidays does not work. You may need to close your browser and clear your cache, history, etc. and start the process over. For some, incognito mode in Chrome works.

Some cash back sites also have deals at Samsung. One example is a popular site that starts an E and ends in bates. Users have reported that this site is the last one you should click through to get the cash back to stick. It does stack with Unidays. The cash back for this site was as "up to" 12%. It is now "up to" 8% The terms say 8% for certified pre-owned phones, 6% for PCs, tables and most items, and 2% for the S8/S8+. The Note 8 is not specifically listed but some people have gotten a notice about earning as much as $70+, while others received much less. This is not a guarantee you will see the payout. The E site may decide there was a glitch and remove all Note 8 cash back amounts. It's not yours until they make the actual payout.

See below in the wiki under frequently asked questions for more information on stacking/combining sites like Unidays and the E-rebate site.

T-Mobile/Sprint SIM

Don't forget to add a free T-MOBILE or SPRINT sim right before checkout. It's the page after you select the unlocked then the black then hit the preorder button. They really hid it on the UNLOCKED Note 8.

I couldn't find where to add the sim for the life of me so I have added an Imgur to help!
https://imgur.com/L8DtjbH

Don't ask if you should get the unlocked or T-Mobile version if you want Wi-Fi calling. The unlocked version has Wi-Fi calling!!! And yes, it will work.

This person doesn't know how to read... please read again. It says if you should get unlocked or T-Mobile... nowhere does it say "other" carriers.

---- THIS IS INCORRECT BLANKET STATEMENT FOR ALL CARRIERS PLEASE STOP SPREADING THIS FALSE INFO

***PLEASE DO NOT MISGUIDE PEOPLE WHO ARE ATT, UNLOCKED PHONE WILL NOT WORK WITH ATT WIFI CALLING***

Checking Out

An error message when checking out means you are using an already used promo email. Samsung was nice enough to wait until the last possible second to let you know. They also kindly saved any credit card you just entered and placed a small authorization each time you hit the place order button.

Promo Emails and Links

Quick update guys:
  • First and most important Fadz is the real deal. Don't hesitate for one second.
  • Second if you are getting an error during checkout that means your e-mail was redeemed.
  • Third this deal is killer - $535 w/Unidays/expedited shipping ($14)/tax ($40) - Cali

Frequently Asked Questions about the Trade-In

Q: What are the highlights of the trade-in program?

A: The main Note 8 pre-order page [samsung.com] has a footnote that provides general details about the trade-in offer. Scroll down to the footnote marked with a "*" and begins with "Limited Time Offer." The Trade-In Terms and Conditions document [samsung.com] provide more details about the requirements.

Samsung will determine, in its sole judgment, whether your Trade-In Device is in good condition. A Trade-In Device is in "good condition" if it:
  • Powers on and holds a charge;
  • Has a functioning display;
  • Has no breaks or cracks or other visible defects that go beyond normal wear and tear;
  • Is not on a black list of any kind.
In addition to being in "good condition", your Qualifying Trade-In Device must satisfy the following additional requirements (as well as all other requirements set forth in these Terms):
  • Has Reactivation Lock, Google Factory Reset Protection, or any other anti-theft locking software disabled;
  • You must have performed a factory reset and removed all personal information from device.

Note: It is unclear if "factory reset" means the phone should be in the reset condition when you mail it in (boots to the setup menu) or if it's ok to reset and go through the set up again to the home screen as long as there's no personal information. The latter has been done by many of us in the past with no problems. To remove the activation pop-up, some people are reporting that turning off wife and cellular in settings and rebooting works.

Note: No one knows if you're phone with a scratch on the screen or peeling finish or screen burn is "good condition." Samsung (actually their trade-in partner) was rejecting trade-ins on a prior S8/S8+ deal so there's no telling what will happen this time. Samsung has corrected many of the denials S8/S8+ deal. Most people believe Samsung will do it right this time for phones that meet the terms to avoid another fiasco. That doesn't mean your phone with a faulty home button or loose power connector or malfunctioning BT would or should get approved. With this Note 8 trade in offer, no one knows how strict they will be with what constitutes "visible defects that go beyond normal wear and tear," unless someone can post "my phone with [fill in the blank flaw] was accepted." Even with that, your flaw might be worse or your phone might be reviewed by another technician who decides to reject it.

Note: Samsung does not require trade-ins to be carrier unlocked. It can be a Verizon, ATT, Sprint, T-Mobile, etc. phone. It must, however, be "unlocked" in the sense that it can't have passcode, activation lock, iCloud lock, etc.

Note: The main trade-in page lists the LG G4 as an option. However, some people are noticing the G4 not listed in the cart (only the Pixel, Pixel XL, G5, G6, V20 remain listed). For this reason, if you're trading in a G4 save a printout of the page where it's listed as well as the footnote on the main promo page.

Note: If you're seeing less than $425 for the trade-in value, you may not have used a valid Note 7 upgrade link. Lower values (e.g. $200 for iPhones) are offered for regular pre-orders (available to everyone).

Q: Trade in ideas?
DEAD: Total Wireless iPhone 5s Refurbished stock goes in and out. 79.99 + Tax + F/S (Keep hitting tab on plan screen to select no plan) [totalwireless.com]
RESTOCKED: Straight Talk iPhone 5s Refurbished Grey 49.99 + Tax OOS (No plan required) [walmart.com]
STILL AVAILABLE: Straight Talk iPhone 5s Refurbished Silver 79.99 + Tax (No plan required) [walmart.com]
RESTOCKED: Straight Talk iPhone 5s Refurbished Grey 49.99 + Tax ($35 minimum plan required) [straighttalk.com] <--- Unidays discount, EB cashback, and ST20OFF (20% off code) can all be stacked for this.

Note about Straighttalk Iphone, which comes with a SIM and $35 one month plan: Some users are simply sending their Straighttalk phone to Samsung in the original condition (that is, it boots to the start or "hello" screen without activating it). Some people are going through the set up process (without adding personal information, Apple ID or any passcode), then turning off wifi and data to stop the activation pop up. Some are keeping the SIM in, others are removing it. Bottom line: there is no single approach people are taking for the ST phone.

Q: When I ship back to Samsung the device I'm trading in, should I send the charger, case or other accessories with the device?

A: From the Samsung FAQ:

Quote :
No - you should only ship the device back to Samsung, and if you no longer need them, discard the other accessories in accordance with your local trash and recycling regulations. No trade in value is offered on anything other than the device, and if you do ship accessories back with the device, those accessories will not be returned.
There is no need to add any paperwork to the box because your FedEx label lists your trade in program number (usually an 11 digit number, the one listed in the trade in email from Samsung with the Fedex label). That's how they will know it's from you. That said, it probably doesn't hurt to include a copy of the trade in email from Samsung in the box or write the trade in program number on the side of the box, hopefully leaving no room for error.

It is also recommended that you take photoes of the phone from different angles as well as the about page. A video showing it works might would also be good to have in the event they screw you on the trade-in (give $25 instead of $425). Proof of condition and functionality would be helpful in a dispute.

Q: Do I just put the shipping label on the box? Should I include the invoice, shipping label, or anything else with the trade-in device in the box?
A: You just need to slap the shipping label on the outside of the box and put the trade-in device inside the box, nothing else. Use bubble wrap to protect the device, if you so choose. You can include your invoice or shipping label inside the box as well, if you want. It won't hurt, but it won't help either.

Q: My phone has been shipped/delivered but I haven't received the shipping label for the trade-in device in my email yet. Is this normal/Where can I get it?
A: This is normal. Be patient and wait a few business days (weekends don't count as business days) for Samsung to send you the email. If you can't wait that long, then you can find the shipping label on your orders page on Samsung's website next to your trade-in device. This has been confirmed by other users from previous Samsung trade-in deals to be the same label as the one that will be emailed to you. Example picture here: https://i.imgur.com/xuybYaL.jpg

Q: How long does it take for Samsung to process the trade-in device after receiving the trade-in device?
A: Several weeks. The directions say to take the package to a Fedex shipping center,
and not to put the package in a Fedex drop box. Probably a wise move so you can get a receipt for the drop off.

Other Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What bands are missing in Unlocked version compared to T-Mobile version?
A: TD-LTE bands are unavailable on the Unlocked version. In general, TD-LTE deployments concentrate in Asia. China Mobile is a good example, and the Unlocked phone cannot be used or roamed onto that carrier's LTE network.

Q: Note 8 does not support the 600MHz T-Mobile network, but when will the network come to my area anyway?
A: Here is a web page with animation showing the T-Mobile 600MHz network deployment plan https://howmobileworks.com/spectrum/

Q: How do I get Unidays + E Cashback to work and stack?
A: My sequence for getting Unidays and the E site that offers cashback to work: Visited Unidays and clicked through to Samsung. Went to the email from Samsung and clicked the special pre-order link ("open in new tab"). Selected phone and options. Added to cart and was prompted to log into my Samsung account. After the cart loaded, clicked the E cashback site extension in my Chrome browser and the page reloaded and the extension flashed green showing that I had an active "shopping trip." Completed transaction. Some of these steps here might be unnecessary (like open in new tab), but I'm just presenting what worked for me. [Note: This is the same sequence I followed a few days ago for a prior purchase. However, when I activated the E cashback shopping trip from the browser extension, I did have to log back into my Samsung account. The cart remained the same].

If the above steps don't work, you may need to close your browser....clean cache, history, etc....open browser and start over

Alternate step-by-step method:

Quote from Verniculous
:
The directions before were for when you didn't need a direct link. You can try this and see if it works:

1) Copy the direct link to buy from Samsung that is in the email they sent to you. It should be something like this https://sso-us.samsung.com/sso/ap...en=[token] where [token] is a string of characters.

2) Log into UNIDAYS, search for Samsung, click Activate offer. That takes you to samsung.com.

3) Then up at the top you should see UNIDAYS and a log in link. Log in to your Samsung account.

4) Then open up a new tab and go to the cashback site and log in. Search for Samsung and click shop now or whatever it says. That should take you to samsung.com. Then paste the direct link in your browser and add the device to your cart and add your trade in device.

Alternatively, you can try this if you are willing to add the cash back site's chrome extension to your Chrome browser:

1) Add the cashback site's chrome extension to your Chrome browser.

2) Copy the direct link to buy from Samsung that is in the email they sent to you. It should be something like this https://sso-us.samsung.com/sso/ap...en=[token] where [token] is a string of characters.

3) Using the Chrome browser with the cash back site's extension installed, log into UNIDAYS, search for Samsung, click Activate offer. That takes you to samsung.com.

4) Then up at the top you should see UNIDAYS and a log in link. Log in to your Samsung account. Then paste the direct link in your browser and add the device to your cart and add your trade in device and check out.
Q: "Your receipt could not be verified as it was hand written; we are unable to verify hand-written receipts"
A: Do not send in a PDF or screenshot of your receipt. Print out your receipt, take a picture of it, and then send that picture in. <- May not be applicable anymore.

Q: Should I cancel my credit card after receiving my phone and shipping out my trade-in device to avoid Samsung possibly rejecting my trade-in device and charging me $400?
A: NO, YOU SHOULD NOT CANCEL YOUR CREDIT CARD!!! It will do nothing to help. In fact, you will end up still having to pay Samsung (they will hunt you down), AND your credit score will take a huge hit. If your trade-in device gets rejected, the proper course of action would be to contact Samsung and provide proof that the device was in working condition prior to you shipping it out in order to try and get the rejection overturned.

Quote :
4. Additional Charges May Apply
If you do not return your Trade-In Device to Samsung within fifteen (15) days after the date you receive your New Samsung Device, then Samsung will charge you for the full amount of the Trade-In Value that was applied to the purchase of your New Samsung Device ("Non-Return Charge"). If your Trade-In Device is not in good condition as described in Section 5 below, then Samsung will value it at twenty five dollars ($25.00) and charge you the Trade-In Value that was applied to the purchase of your New Samsung Device minus the twenty-five dollar ($25.00) value ("Device Condition Charge"). You agree to pay the Non-Return Charge or the Device Condition Charge if either such charge applies. If applicable, you authorize Samsung to charge the Non-Return Charge or the Device Condition Charge to the same credit card or other payment method you used to purchase your New Samsung Device. If you do not have sufficient credit available, Samsung will notify you and you must provide an alternative payment method.
Q: (AT&T users) How can I get Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE working on my unlocked phone?
A: Add any dummy AT&T IMEI (i.e. IMEI with AT&T identifier) onto your account by calling customer service and updating your IMEI.

How to escalate a rejected trade-in
Many valid trade-ins will be rejected. Calling samsung customer support has been frustrating and ineffective. The most effective way to escalate this is to e-mail officeofthepresident@sea.samsung.com and ecomm08@sea.samsung.com. Most are reporting success. Good luck!

Dispute the charge with your bank. (I hope you used Amex)

If you have time to waste then take a look at these other options.

$25 additional discount with unidays.

$480 plus tax for a brand new note 8 with the charger and SD card isn't that bad especially combined with the $50 Walmart iPhone 5s that is constantly on sale.

Where can I find the $50 iPhone 5s? Cheapest I saw was ~$100 for a refurbed straight talk one. Would this work for a trade in?

Link doesnt work. But there are the trade-in offers on Samsung's website. Can I go on eBay and buy one of the qualified trade-in old phones and do the deal? What do you have to do exactly besides making sure that the old phone is fully functional? Anyone has done a trade in with Samsung in the past please chime in.
