Android is not locked you can just check off install from unknown sources in a menu option if the app is hot in the play store

You can, but this is a pretty meh box to do it on. The s912 chip is basically buggy and mostly unsupported on the software side crap. Great if you just want to brag about cheap box specs or run benchmark tests...not so great for real world performance in Kodi or with IPTV.

I would highly recommend the nvidia shield tv if you have the extra cash for it if not then the mi box works great just no lan port which Is wayyyyyyy better than wifi. steer clear of these run of the mill cheaply made boxes

That was my first thought about these things. For $10, sure, why not? But the Mi Box, esp. running Android TV, is a better value for money. Otherwise, some variety of Roku would work for the avg person.

I have the Nvidia Shield, FireTV2, Mi Box, and a 2nd gen Firestick. The Shield is nice but complete and no additional performance overkill in terms of what you specifically asked about. If you don't plan to game on it it's not worth the money.

If you plan on using a wifi connection get the Mi Box (from Walmart). If you are the type that likes to hardwire your connection get the FireTV. The latter of which also actually has much easier noobie learning curve to setting things up (with the Downloader app) once you realize that most of the specific stuff you want the most up-to-date versions of in that respect isn't actually being DL'd directly from the google playstore.

How is the Fire TV over WiFI? is the Mi Box notably better?

They both are the same, I would go with Mi Box as you can use it even without internet connection.
Say you wanted to watch something on USB drive or Local hard disk. Wanted to watch something on your local network share.

Fire TV will not start without internet connection, it will not work offline with no internet connection

What itsme13 stated below is true, but I personally never use them for anything that doesn't require an internet connection to begin with. Plus downloading stuff to your drive/disk kinda takes you out of the grey area aspect involved with what you asked about, so that hypothetical sell isn't a big one for me.

I do have an easier time picking up a strong wifi signal on the Mi Box then the Firetv though, hence my recommendation if you go that route.
