People who don't want to use their phone? My phone is $600+; this is $108. And I can leave it there, plugged into a screen. As the name implies, it's a "desktop". So it stays on my desk. Great for a cheap computer for families.

Actually, it would be a difference. Chrome on a phone (even with a BT keyboard and monitor is different in capability and presentation than Chrome on a Chromebox or Chrome on a PC (or MAC). An easy example.. you don't have extensions in Chrome on a phone. The presentation is different as well. Nothing wrong with that. It makes perfect sense. They're designed for different environments.

But a Chromebox is great for casual use. The best example I have are people who are sitting on old computers that they've had for years and years. The computers are running XP, Vista, Windows 7, etc.... These people don't do a lot on their computers, but these old systems are old and slow, they haven't been updated, they have viruses, etc... So the thing sits in some corner of a house and doesn't get used. Most of the slowness comes from old hard drives.

So then you get this Chromebox, or one like it. You take that old monitor, keyboard and mouse that work fine and hook it up to the Chromebox. 5 minutes later, you're done. Now you've got a system that starts up in seconds, updates itself in the background without taking over the machine and is far more secure than Windows or MacOS. Now you can do all the social media, web surfing, YouTube watching and everything else you want and for what; a little over a hundred bucks?

If you're looking to play games or do 4K video, I would pass. This unit isn't for that. But for run of the mill work which is what most people do, they work great. I've given units to family and friends that were effectively shut-ins because of their old equipment. These change everything.

The other benefit is that they just don't require support. The biggest headache I've had is for people who want to print and scan. Not hard, but you have to pay more attention to what particular printer you buy if you're using a Chromebox or Chromebook.

This is a good buy.

I've been watching this and it's been higher than $160 for the last couple years. I finally bought one to use as my living room computer hooked up to my TV.

*Edit - Bought a second. I've been using Chromebooks for a few years, and love them.

FIrst picture actually says it a 5 pack. I doubt you'll get it, but 5 for $107.98 would be pretty amazing

Does this have any trouble streaming HD videos from youtube and stuff? I just need one for my mom to do simple navigation and watch shows.

Damn, a Chromebook desktop sounds fantastic. I love how fast Chromebooks are for such an insanely low price.

While Chromebooks/Desktops are very limited in what they can do, they are a must have for people who just like to browse the internet and run simple Office programs. Don't let your family browse the internet on those like $400 computers from 2006.

Why do I think I read Google was sacking Chrome in favor of a more universal / robust Android?
