It's so over the top but then 16gb of RAM? 256gb SSD? 1070s in SLI for a 1080p 60hz screen? Odd machine

If SLI had good support for VR, I might jump on this, but it really doesn't look likely that there will be any major benefits anytime soon.
At this price point, better to wait (hope?) for a GTX 1080 laptop, or, god forbid, a 1080ti laptop.

Obviously monitor (non-VR) gamers might like this if they don't want something portable.

GTX 1070 SLI may be overkill for 1080P display but if you plug this in to a 4K monitor, it will be a real blessing. Granted SLI is not enough compatible with the new releases until the SLI profile comes out but for SLI, they come out quickly. Also when games start using the Multi GPU solution from Dx12, like Ashes of Singularity does, it will be a very powerful solution.

Yeah the specs doesn't make much sense but the price is reasonable for high end brand name gaming desktop replacement laptops.

Can you disable one of the 1070 and use only one power supply at times?

Yes you can. This is just like normal Desktop SLI setting and can be done from Nvidia Control panel.

I think the odd screen size is the reason why they don't offer a 120hz panel.

Correct. The GT73VR with 17in 120hz G-sync display (and 32 gb ram) was on sale for nearly the same price earlier in the year, but there is no G-Sync for 18.4 inch screens.

BUT - there is a review on YouTube and in some other forum replies around the 'net that folks easily overclock the panels to 100.

Can this drive an external 2k monitor with gsync enabled?

With 2 heavy power supply weight about 15LB . So good luck. But these power supply will not kill you. And the power connect will keep filling out since coble is too short.
