It's a 1366x768 resolution screen. It's a hardware specification, not software specification. Therefore, you can't "configure" it to have a higher resolution.

Resolution is something you should just pay more to get a higher resolution of you care about that. For the price, it's just fine, but know what you are getting. My wife has a 3 year old laptop and doesn't care about the resolution (just screen size), so it's not a deal breaker for all, but is a pretty big negative for me. I would probably look for a 1920x1080 (FHD) screen.

For writing a paper, or something simple, this should do just fine.

Yes, not for power intensive usage, just for the basic stuff, you can run office 365, browsing, and small applications, I believe can extend the RAM, not so sure, it's worth for $200, may be not for $350 if you don't get the rebate.

There won't be any problems if you follow the instructions page and make sure you get the Dell Invoice. My $50 rebate for a 24" dell monitor for $50 AR was pretty quick also!

I did a rebate claim for $150 earlier and initially I was also scared but they received it and said I was approved. So I guess it's not as bad as it seems. Just got to be careful and take your time doing the rebate since one mistake and it will be tough to successfully claim the rebate

An i3 (recent generations) aren't that bad really, but I don't know much about the 6006u model. I'd much rather have an i3 and Solid State Drive rather than an i7 and Hard Disc Drive (spinning disc), assuming you weren't planning on doing any manual upgrades: it's possible to replace the storage (ssd/hdd) on most laptops, but not possible to change CPU or Screen (as mentioned above).

Even the recent i7-7500u model is still just dual core, I believe, with the "u" label.
