For those who are unaware, this is a really good price for this SPECIFIC rifle. The AR-556 is usually $20-50 more than the S&W M&P 15 sport 2, but honestly, the two are very similar. The Ruger has a 1:8 twist whereas the S&W has a 1:9 twist. 1:8 is usually preferred unless you will only shoot 55grain.

Both use 4140 steel barrels (instead of 4150 which is better, but unless you intend on trying to melt the barrel, you probably won't see any difference).

The good news is that ALL of the AR-15s are selling cheap.

If you want a good, solid, entry level AR-15 from a name you know and trust without doing any assembly or upgrades, both are solid performers. You can buy cheaper and you can get better at the same price point, but you'll need to know what you're looking at and some assembly may be required. But, for major brand name guns, the AR-556 is a fantastic choice in cost/performance/reliability out of the box.

This is a direct impingement gun. I've never seen any guns more stupid than DI guns, which literally poops where it eats, fouling the ammo feed area. Also, most modern guns, and even the archaic AK, use piston operations. Wouldn't pay $200 for a DI gun. Get a gas piston AR instead.

Adams Arms selling cheap piston ARs at around $500 mark. Worth it. Less cleaning required and will last an eternity if you slap on a 4150 steel CHF barrel.

Luckily for you, no one is forcing you to buy one.

Aren't the G.I. M16A2's DI as well?

Of course, as are the M4's they're using more recently.

We'll probably get a rant about how it's a horribly unreliable platform with undersized ammo and no stopping power next.

Yes. Poor engineering honestly. Do you see any other DI guns in existence? Not even America's light machine guns, the M249, run DI. Actually, go look up a strip video for the M249 and AK47. The piston systems are eerily similar.

Oh poo. The trade-off is a little more cleaning for a little more accuracy. Watch Iraqvet8888 on YouTube and compare the DI vs piston meltdown videos. Nothing like online mall ninjas to crap all over a decent deal.

also, I know it's apples and oranges being that the M249 is an open bolt/belt fed weapon, but the M16/AR platform is orders of a magnitude more reliable.

Iv8888 also shows that you can't really kill a good piston gun, in particular the POF.

They both basically failed around the same point, replace a 10.00 gas tube and you're back

Look at his POF meltdown. He never could kill it, he even admitted he was surprised.

Just watched. Impressive but not exactly still reliable. Half the video is him getting 1-3 rounds at a time before malfunctions forced him to clear the weapon.

the easy solution is to just buy both a M&P and a AR556
