Amazon Fire HDX 8.9" Tablet (Includes Special Offers), Full-HD 339ppi Touchscreen, 2.5GHz Quad-Core Processor, Dual-Band Wi-Fi, FireOS - (Your Choice: Storage)

This is a fourth gen 2014 Kindle Fire HDX 8.9. Its the most powerful Amazon tablet ever made. It has a much faster cpu (Snapdragon 805 with Adreno 420), the highest resolution screen (2560 x 1600), Dolby Atmos and very high performance AC wireless networking.

I've bought these "certified refurbished" Amazon devices from Woot before, and they looked and worked like new. Woot is a subsidiary of Amazon. The regular kindles I've bought from them had battery life equaling a new one, so it looks like the batteries are swapped for new ones in the refurbishing process.

This is stuck on an older version of FireOS that I believe is built on android 5 lollipop, they generally are very resistant to unlocking the bootloader and/or installing custom roms. Older versions of the 8.9 could be hacked but these are as likely to brick as they are to take TWRP and something like LineageOS.

HOWEVER, if you like the Amazon ecosystem, like to read on a tablet vs an e-ink display or just want to consume media these are beasts with gorgeous screens and sound. VERY different from the current el cheapo Amazon tablets with slow cpus and low resolution screens.

For what it is and the condition they're likely to be in, this is a very good price. I see these for $150-250+ used with dings and scratches. If you can even find one. Amazon has 3 of them for sale from 3rd party sellers used at $259 and up.

You can install the Play store if it comes with fireos prior to 4.5.5.2. I'm looking into if it can be done with V5.xx. Most if not all apps from the Amazon app store are compatible with it.

I got one as my son uses a 2013 7" HDX (the second most powerful Amazon tablet ever made) to read on in dark rooms and likes using it to watch shows and listen to music. This is bigger, faster and has a better screen.

Amazon product page for reference.

The screen of the HDX is far superior than any of the current fire tablets.
That said I don't know how much confidence I have on Amazon's refurbish process.
When I had to replace my HDX under warranty, the first two refurbs they sent me as replacement had problems of their own, and did not get a satisfactory one until #3.

Look at the XDA forum. They have stickies that say DON'T DO IT. Even experts struggle to avoid bricking it and the unlock process specifically says it doesn't work with the 2014's.

I wish it did, I'd put another rom on it in a heartbeat. However we live in the amazon ecosystem and have at least 7-8 fire and kindle devices. I know its not for everyone. We wanted a bigger higher performance Fire device and everything they've made in the last 3 years was a slow piece of crap with a bad screen, priced accordingly.

Better sound quality and higher resolution than even the latest Galaxy S3. It is a IPS display compare to Galaxy's AMOLED but you are also paying only $119 instead of close to $500. I believe you can even install the Google play store and get most of your android apps on it.

Yes, you can sideload the Play store and use almost any app in it providing you can root it. Amazon worked really hard to prevent rooting at 4.5.5.2 and above. Some report some versions of towelroot or kingroot being able to do it. Apparently newer versions of the Play store work poorly on 4.5.x.x.

I bought a top of the line 8.9 HDX when they first came out (cost a lot, but 4 payment option and credit i had got to me). It is still by far, the highest quality Fire and one of the best tablets in general I have ever used. Not the easiest to hook up to a TV, etc. and they have stopped the Fire OS upgrades for the HDX, Still an awesome tablet.

Yes, you can sideload the Play store and use almost any app in it. Very few apps need android 6 or higher. Heck, I have a kitkat device and I think I've only seen 3 apps that needed a higher version of android.

Have you sideloaded the APKs on an HDX? It's easy on the new ones (that have the newest Fire OS, but I heard it did not work well on the HDX. i might have to try with mine if it's working for you, I haven't researched it for a while.

Shame they never revised this thing. Seems like they went for price over quality on the Fire tablets.

If the tab comes with fireos 4.5, its easy to root and do a lot of stuff. I haven't seen a root for fireos v5. However worst case you can sideload the apks. So when you get it, check the fireos version before you connect it to wifi.

I'll look for something on root and play store for fireos v5.

Worst case these sell for $139/16GB used and $259 refurbished on ebay. You might even make some money flipping it.
