Micro Center currently offers the AMD FX-8320e and FX-8350 AM3+ processors for $49.99 or $69.99 after rebate, respectively. There's also $30 off on any AMD motherboard combo too, regardless of socket.

There are cases where it's a better value to just buy these outdated chips than the Ryzen chips. For instance, some of us foolishly (including yours truly) bought a AM3/AM3+ socket mobo years ago.

Per this list: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php , these are the benchmark scores of the Ryzen chips <=$130 and the ones included in this deal.

Ryzen 1300X: 7803 / $130
Ryzen 1200: 6905 / $110
FX-8350: 8943 / $70
FX-8320e: 7509 / $50

The 8350 chip on this deal is more powerful, is cheaper, and doesn't require those of us with an AM3/AM3+ mobo to buy an AM4 mobo (which may or may not support the RAM we have on hand). Albeit the chips in this deal consume roughly double the electricity of the Ryzen chips.

I personally only use my desktop (with a much older, and much weaker AM3-socket chip) maybe 10 hours/month for when I feel like playing some games. Even with the ~60W difference in power consumption between the newer and older AMD chips, it'd take several months of continuous full-throttle use to make back the $40 difference between a Ryzen 1200 and the FX-8350. And that's not considering what I'd have to spend on a new mobo (and possibly new RAM).

Basically, it's not necessarily a better choice to go with Ryzen for everyone. However, for people who building a brand new computer, it'd be a good idea to go with the Ryzen chips over the ones in this deal.

Thanks, OP. Got an Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 Micro ATX AM3+ motherboard about two years ago, for practically nothing after McAfee MultiAccess rebate bundle from tigerdirect. Considering blowing the dust off of it and pairing it with one of these.

Yeah. I got the last ATX 970 motherboard at my store and it was open box. It said item was complete, but I checked and it's missing SATA cables. Manager took extra $20 off. So $50 for CPU and $16 for motherboard.

Would I see a significant improvement from my current A8 processor that is roughly 4-5 years old?

Also if I got it right I could just swap one of these into my existing motherboard and not have to reinstall Windows and other programs?

I use primarily for video conversion of DVD and Blu-ray, basic browsing, and MS office applications. my computer is my Plex server as well.

If it's an A8 desktop, it probably uses an FM motherboard so these FX CPUs will not be compatible. These can only be used on AM3 motherboards.

Thanks very helpful. Looks like my best option is to look for a good ryzen deal and just bite the bullet.

A lot of the good models were already gone and discontinued.

Yeah, a Ryzen 1600 or 1600X would be a good upgrade for you.

Was able to pick up an ASRock 990fx Killer open box for $50. Bought the 2-year replacement plan for $5. Read reviews and this mobo is hit or miss. But going to give it a try.
