A year for a 9v in a smoke detector is pretty awful imo. I have been getting 3-4 years using Duracell Procells which you can get for about $1-$1.50 a piece online depending on when and how many you buy.

The Dollar store cheap batteries are OK but they do not last in my experience. You do get what you pay for here imo.

the 99 cent store batteries normally are brand named batteries.,
same quality as you paid $5/each, it might have been on shelf for longer time ....

Maybe the particular store I went to had them on the shelf for awhile (though the date seemed to be fine), but all I know is I tried some C-cells that were put into a wireless door bell that was hardly ever used and they died in less than 5 months with hardly any use. And the 9-volts and AAs I got for other things died fairly quickly.

Name brand 9v are usually ridiculously priced. This is a good price on a good battery. Repped.
