AMEX Extended Payment Option - 10,000 Rewards to sign up for enrolling

Just got a letter that offers 10,000 Membership Rewards points for enrolling in the Extended Payment option. It appears that if you have this option all purchases over $100 automatically go into the Extended Payment category and you pay 19.24%. I called in and got some confusing responses to my questions regarding how this works if you have Autopay the full statement balance. I was told that the point will be awarded 2-6 weeks after enrollment and would not be clawed back if you cancel.

Be clear I am not suggesting that anybody sign up to use this feature to pay off the balance over time at this rate. However it appears that you can sign up and override the 'Extended Payment' option for one or two cucles until you get your points - then cancel. I suggest further research to make sure. It appears that an invitation is needed to join.

They offered this last year for Gold Card holders and I did it without any problems. Keep in mind this offer will only be for charge cards where the balance has to be paid every month. They are paying you 10,000 points to essentially convert large purchases to a traditional credit card structure, so it's risk free if you pay off your balance already and continue doing so.

You don't need to cancel anything. You get the points just for signing up for the option for extended pay. You can then decided per eligible sale if you want to use that option practically.

I'm confused how the autopay will work. The letter says that purchases over $100 will be automatically moved into Pay Over Time balance. My autopay option is to pay the statement balance - will that include the 'Pay Over Time' balance?

I did this last year with Platinum Card, couldn't be simpler. As long as you are on autopay for full balance, that "$100 will be automatically moved into Pay Over Time balance" never happens. It is just an option if you don't pay your full balance. I found it to be a great way to earn a free 10,000 points!

The invitation shows a signup link as americanexpress.com/EXPOenroll9

but it didn't work when I tried it.

There's also a phone number 1-866-280-0566 but this needs a unique offer code.

I called them to check about this today. I was told their system is down and should be up on Wednesday. Give it a try later today. Try the link from thepointsguy
