This is a pro level portable player that accepts micro sd card for expansion. I have it and it is great sounding, with good battery life. Fry's can match bestbuy price if you choose that route, just make sure to get the black color for that price match.

I'm tempted to say that a used LG V10, V20 or HTC 10 with the high quality DACs would be a good alternative to buying only an mp3 player but then again, this Sony player may be better than those.

I think unless those phones are near this price point its hard to justify a flagship price for quality playback of audio. I ended up just going the low end but good route for most my devices bow. My phone is $60 but great as a tablet with 8 cores 16gb internal and 2gb ram. Since the camera sucks a small mid range point and shoot gives me the high end quality without worrying if I break my phone i just lost my everything device. Not getting insurance helps a ton and I am far more likely to drop my phone than a point and shoot with a strap.

Now there is the high quality mp3 player to consider. It would be great if you are a audiophile going my route. If not though your flagship phones high quality audio is wasted since you don't have the hd headphones or speakers.

Anyway just my take on comparing everything to the latest flagship phone that now seems to run 1k to buy unless you let tmobile charge you a rental fee of $30 forever while you keep jumping from phone to phone.

The 3 phones I mentioned, V10, V20, and HTC 10 have hifi DACs... V10 and V20 have "quad DAC" (whatever that means) and I did have V20 and boy, the audio is great! And the amp inside is much better than the other standard and even flagship phones. As these are considered "old" phones now, they could be picked up for a decent price.

Those LG V Series phones all have high quality DACs & amps. Not too familiar with the HTC 10. Not sure how they would compare to this Sony though.

The cost of the LG phones when new were way more than the price of this Sony player. I could be wrong, but I believe the DACs & amps on the new $1K phones are nothing special.

Higher quality audio.

Is there a way to get better audio out of a smartphone-type device (like the iPhone)? Like is there an app you can use that has better codecs than the stock media player, or is it a hardware limitation, and multifunctional devices just can't compete with music specific devices (like the Walkman.)

iPhone camera connection kit 3 with a USB DAC like the Dragonly Black or Red is amazing and allows you to charge while listening to wired headphones.

Hi-Res refers to the type of uncompressed music file, which includes FLAC, DSD, and Apple lossless supported by this player. DSD is especially high resolution, in that it is the file system used in Super Audio CD format.

I did just pick up a used LG V10 for $110 on eBay. I'd say it's at least on par with this. There are some comparisons to DAP/DACs in the link below:

I've gotten a full week of heavy use with a single charge. That's something no phone can do. I think it sounds better than any phone I've used. Of course that means nothing seeing that sound is extremely subjective.
