Nice deal. Now that once SB8200 becomes popular this should drop further. But this is adequate for 99.9% of current users.

I'd just picked one up from Bestbuy after PM this evening.

Can anyone please tell why the Puma chip is so infamous? And what's a good alternative modem?

Good price but does not work with Optimum. I would recommend reading the reviews to see if it works with your ISP

The Puma Chipset had latency issues. I had purchased a Netgear CM700 and returned it before I even opened it because of what I had read on the Puma Chipset.

As far as alternatives go I haven't figured out what to get.

Its been fixed awhile ago. Ive been using it for 6 months. No ping issues and 8.8MB/s download speed from Charter. Thats faster than the 60Mbps I pay for.

I use to have horrible problems when i first got it around Feb 2017. Charter pushed a few firmware updates all has been good since. PUMA issue was real for like a year. Intel was very slow at fixing this but is the only modem with 32 channels and since been resolved,

For anybody who wants to know how to disable the lights on this thing: you can't. If you really want them covered up, you have to take the modem apart and cover them up with something thick, like electrical tape.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of people that are using devices with Puma chipsets without any noticeable problems.

One good thing about all the continued controversy is sale prices like this on decent hardware.

1 MB = 8 Mbits.
So 8.8 MB = 70.4 Mbits.

Got this for $75 with a Staples coupon last month. Returned it after reading about the issues with the puma chip. Got the 6183 instead.
