I cook almost every night. I've owned expensive instant-read thermometers, and I own several of these. Unless you have very specific needs, this is a fine thermometer that should serve you well. Some more expensive thermometers read a bit faster, but I can't honestly say I've ever cared about the difference in speed, nor has it ever affected the quality of my meal. I previously bought three; none of them have failed yet.

Some things I really like about this thermometer:
* uses common battery types, not button cells
* measures very high temperatures -- useful if you're frying in oil
* probe plus handle is long enough that you avoid burning yourself in high-temp situations (e.g hot oil)
* I like that it folds
* I like that it is cheap enough that I can have several

WTH is wrong with people these days.

Guess what? I cook, and I have NO thermometer, therefore I do not care about the speed of a readout or how many seconds it takes to get one. Why does everyone have to be as anal as you, or else they are a shill?

I looked back at this user's previous post and he's not a shill. Seems to frequently post about headphones, but no suspicious behavior.

Some people are always looking for a reason to attack. Personally, I appreciated the feedback and repped him.

How long will it take to settle the reading?

It's one of the faster ones I have. Big display too so I don't need my glasses!

I hope this one is better than the Link Innovation one (https://slickdeals.net/f/10457040-link-innovation-digital-instant-read-thermometer-for-grill-milk-bbq-candy-50-off-7-99-amazon?v=1&src=SiteSearch) from a few weeks ago. I only got 3-4 uses out of that one until it gave up the ghost. It's worth a try for that price.

Much slower than say a themapen.

Give it a count of 5 seconds (Amazon stats show 4-8 seconds) before it settles on a reading.

The internals are the same as my cheap wal-mart $5 thermometer, just with a folding tip.
