Newegg has Synology DS216+ii for$260, free shipping and no tax for most states. Shoprunner eligible.

I noticed other Synology deals posted around but this is the one that I have been eyeing for.

Amazon has the same price but has tax for most states.

If you've gone a year you probably don't need it
And you continue to *rag* on *every* Synology post.... Is on the fly transcoding the *only* thing you care about? Guess what, there is a lot more here at this price point and if transcoding is your primary issue, pre-transcode or simply state why you think QNAP is better than the equivalent Synology NAS DS216+ii @ $260Wave.

I've been waiting a year for this to drop. Now the one is out... And I'm debating if I really need one. Thanks for posting though.

Oh. You're right. Eh. Tax kills it for me, SoCal. The DS218+ is out for $40 more which is the non sale price of this NAS. I was actually eying the DS918+ and DS1817+

so what justifies this price? that it supposedly can do transcoding on the fly?

Can anyone offer a plausible explanation why adding 1gb of ram adds over $200 to the price? As far as I can tell, nothing else changes except for the description of the device no longer lists transfer rates when the ram is switched to 2gb.

Also, Red Hat recently dropped support for Brtfs. I don't know what effect that may have on devices currently using the filesystem or the future of the filesystem. It seems that there will at least be slowed growth and perhaps decline.

Honestly, I wish I could bring myself to buy something like this. I just don't think I can keep myself from building an OpenNAS box. Is that overkill? Probably. But aside from just enjoying the process, I like knowing I'm not cheaping out on anything.
