Both the new and old are both prone to that. The old one, this one, is easier to fix though. Just put a #30 o ring between the handle and the screw on tip. Problem solved.

Imho, well worth spending more for the ones the newer type of handle. This type is really bad about building up gunk.

I went for HX5911/11 at Walmart [walmart.com].
Same price, but 5911 has quad pacer. My 2 cents...

I solve this problem by unscrewing head, rinsing both head and handle and screwing it back in place. The whole operation takes 15 seconds.

Or the old brush tip when you're done with it. I keep one around for cleaning when needed. Like the o ring idea though.

And unscrewing to let dry works as well.

Walmart has these at 20 or 25 with an instant 5 off coupon in store. Not sure if they are different models but they are both essence. A 2 pack of refill heads are roughly the same price as the unit (name brand) also they should be changed about every 3 months.
Fwiw i personally have never had the mold problem people complain about. I do disassemble mine and clean it once a week tho. Takes less then a minute to do so.
