Would this fix my garbage spectrum internet? Speed is not a problem (70mbps) but I can't play any games without lag/random ping spikes.

I knew I'd be downgrading when I moved to Florida from Boston trading Comcast for Spectrum (only choice) but this is unbelievable.

Only if the modem you are using is the problem. Node congestion or a variety of other issues could be at play. We've been with charter, then Charter Spectrum, now it seems Spectrum but we are lucky to have very few users in our area.
Besides occasionally going down for night maintenance or a problem here or there after a long time with them, I rate the service as having been excellent compared to other services for us but that can be completely YMMV based on their infrastructure as well as how many P2P monster downloaders and 4KUHD streamers cinsume your shared pipe.

If u moved from a larger elderly Floridia area (yes I know Florida has large cities too I am just saying demographics can be a factor) to a heavily populated city or suburb things can change dramatically.
Sometimes you have to play a little detective and gather information in case there is a problem. A couple of summers back I started noticing about a two hour window were service would have issues, then each day it would correct itself. By logging the time each day for about a week + 1/2 weeks with speedtest data/connection errors I was able to give them more concrete times to monitor after they came out and checked the boxes and replaced older connections (that were not the problem). They fixed the problem after a few days of capturing data during the problem window vs a call saying, my internet isnt working kind of thing.

I have Comcast, and when we have been DoSed before by salty gamers, I believe we were unable to get a new IP unless we switched to our old modem and router setup. Would it be worth buying this as a backup for this purpose? Currently have another SB modem in use, but unsure about this networking stuff. In general, this seems like an amazing price for a SB modem

edit - our IP seems to never change. comcast has not been helpful either

I would look into gaming vpns! Honestly it sounds like the node hops you make to the server is the problem!

This modem is and END of Life no longer authorized unit for Comcast. Don't even bother.

Plus, I had the SB6183, it had a consistent burning smell. Avoid!!

I have the refurbished version of this modem for the past month and it's chugging along smoothly. Still at $29.99 on Amazon.

This is on the retired list for Comcast xfininity in my area. I bought one, and they told me it was old and would not be supported much longer. It works great, but won't let me have speeds over 180MBs in my area even though 250MB/s is the plan I'm on. When I asked Comcast about this, they said they cannot get the full 250MB/s out of this modem because it is incompatible in some way, but if I upgraded to the 618x version it would support the full 250MB/s. Meh - it works great at 180MB/s. I'd probably not be able to tell the difference - but just giving the heads up that this is older tech.

It's actually really easy to change ip address with Comcast. All you do is change the mac address on the router. Unplug both your modem and router, wait a minute, plug back in, and you will have a new ip.

Weird, I can get 250 out of my consistently. Not sure if it will go higher since my speed is capped at 250.
