Nice. Awesome unit. Had one for about a year now and just added the old DX213 2-bay expansion unit to it with 6 8TB WD Red HDDs total and its been awesome. Having a NAS in the house is pretty darn cool. Seems like Im regularly finding new and cool things to do with it.

lol

same price at B&H and Newegg. has been this price for A WHILE. this is the regular sale price.

make a post when it goes below $400 like the QNAP TS-451+ deals from the spring time. which we all know, it never will. Synology commands a premium b/c they think DSM is "all that". owning both Synology and QNAP, the latest QTS rev gives Synology a run for their money. in addition, build quality for QNAP's comparable unit is superior and so are the specs. Synology must think they are "all that" too as a company, which is evident from their pick and choosing which customer support emails to reply to. sometimes it's as if they don't even care when you find something that can't work right or that it doesn't. with QNAP, I can hop on a live chat with them and get an answer right away. if there is an issue, they log and it and actually follow up with me on a support ticket with a resolution. chances are though, someone on the QNAP forum figured it out, developed a work around, and QNAP is busy implementing it. hop onto reddit and you'll find the typing whining from synology fanbois who tried to dabble with QTS but aren't willing to put in the time to learn how to use it. so, they bash QNAP when something doesn't work right and get extremely vocal about it. to be honest - you can't go wrong with either one today in 2017. however Synology does not come out on top in all categories as they did before. it's 50/50 split now.

sorry for turning this into a Synology vs QNAP post, but it had to be said. a regular $50 off an already overpriced box is not a good deal at all.

I'm in total agreement. I do want one of these boxes (either syn or qnap) but when it comes down to almost pulling the trigger to buy one, I can't self justify spending that much for one of these boxes. It's not like they are putting in good processors like at least an i3 or something.. these are dumb'd down processors.

I do love the box form factors and drive access.. In the end, these should all be "at least" $100 cheaper than their current prices. There aren't too many players in this market space... mainly qnap and syn, so they collectively keep the prices high.

the prices are coming down across the board for these mid-range NAS's (if you could even call them that), but if you want a NAS with an i3 or i5 you'll be dropping a lot of $$$. check out the prices of the QNAP TVS series and you'll see what I mean. it's crazy lol.$2,000? sheeeeet. I think QNAP's are overpriced, but when it comes to Synology they just straight up take advantage of people like what Apple does but at least Apple has awesome hardware quality. Synology boxes are more and more plastic, and are more and more junky

I have a QNAP TS-853a that I got a good deal on, that was really only specific to me due doubling up a sale price with an eCoupon code that I got from a previously botched order from newegg. it has a N3150. for perspective, the comparable Synology box is $50-$100 more and has a pathetic atom processor from 2014. atrocious, right? the N3150 is what's in my chromebook however I will say, QTS (and DSM) runs beautifully on these types of quad cores and it has been able to handle everything I have thrown at it (so far). thankfully these NAS OS's are very very lightweight themselves. the issue comes when people try to use their NAS boxes outside of the original scope, and I partly blame the manufacturers for marketing them in the way that they do (ie 4K Plex transcoding as a marketing feature, when we all know the thing would choke when doing so). also doesn't help things when people are running a shyte ton of apps

in the end, it's a matter of balancing price, convenience, and features. for those wanting raw power, springing for one of those Dell T tower servers with a xeon processor running windows server running may be the way to go for some people wanting raw power regardless of power consumption (NAS's sip power).

It has dedicated processing for transcoding, presuming the target market is a Plex Media Server user:

-Single H.264 4K or triple Full HD online transcoding

And it comes with a reasonable QuadCore:

Intel® Pentium® Processor N3710 Quad Core 1.6 burst up to 2.56 GHz

I wasn't aware this was new the standard pricing though, it was simply reduced aggressively in my Amazon list and figured I'd share.

yeah.. I've been reading mixed reviews about Plex transcoding.. because I think that's one of the main features people are looking at for these boxes.

I don't care for 4k transcoding.. max I care for would just be the standard 1920x1080. I know someday I'll drop the $300-$350 for one of these because I really want 4 bay.. I noticed there was a deal a few months back at $360... that's getting close to what I want to pay. Again, as long as it can transcode 1920x1080.

Edit: I'm a cheapass.. hence, why I'm on SD laugh out loud

I ordered one, but am not sure it's not worth the extra for the 918+. Did you just not need the minor updates?

What did you pay? Think used ones would be reliable?

Which RAID type are you using with the 6 drives? I don't think I need the capability of the 916+ but I like more drive redundancy. Two NASes synced to each other might be safer and have a similar cost so it was tough to go 916+ version 216+ and then a second NAS down the road.
