I've had this machine for over 2 years now. Purchased it via a w00t refurb deal and is still going strong. The reason Starbucks' beans suck is for several reasons actually but I won't go into that. You need to be looking for beans that have "ROASTED ON" dates and NOT "BEST BEFORE" dates. And the reason is simple; in order to properly extract the full flavor of a bean, get full BAR pressure, and get anything that resembles espresso crema are fresh oils. Beans must be fresh. Day #3 after roast is the ideal date and goes downhill very slowly from there. After buying and supporting the local roasters in my area and almost going broke, I am now roasting from green beans

I have this machine and loved it.. it worked with all type of whole beans from Peet's coffee but all Starbucks coffee beans are pain. They never come our perfect and always under extract no matter what the grind setting is. Just my 2 cents.

The only thing you are missing is that your machine doesn't make coffee.

I too have this and Peet's major dickason always comes out great for me at a grind of 5. I've noticed that you really have to do a few trials when using different brand of beans to get the right grind and a good extracted shot. I've had good shots from the Starbucks espresso beans too.

Me too! For those thinking of purchasing, or for those who already have it for that matter, you will need to pre-heat the portafilter and head group before pulling a good 20-25 sec shot. Can be done buy pulling 2 empty shots through the portafilter or just attaching and leave the machine on for 20 minutes while you get ready.

Also consider buying a heavy 53mm tamp. Tamps like night vs day when compared to the included one.

I bought this machine used on eBay several years back for $420.

It is an excellent machine. The shots can be a little inconsistent, but that's to be expected from any manual espresso machine.

I definitely love this machine. I use it everyday.

This is a semi-auto and my shots are fairly consistent. Maybe try adjusting the grind size every 2 days or so when using the same beans and keep your tamp to a consistent 30lbs. Manual would be a La Pavoni, where YOU and the lever are the pump.

I got the same problem with starbucks grinds, thought it was the machine but now that you chimed in I think I will try some Peet's coffee. Any suggestions on what works well and settings?
