Sams Club is offering the Samsung 7 Edge for $11.98 x 24 months (Around $288) plus activation $25 fee on the Sprint Network and tax. Receive Sams Club gift card for $425.00 Yes you have to activate phone in store. Yes this is on installments. Pay off the phone after 50 days of service and Sprint will unlock your phone. YMMV.

Is the gift card offer only for s7 edge. I see s7 available in my local store, but not the edge version.

Any other way to unlock instead of waiting 50 days?

Currently, Sam's Club is offering a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge for $11.98/m (Installment not lease) + $425 Sam's Club Gift Card (Good til Oct 31, 2017, Good for NEW and UPGRADES)
Theoretically, if you can use the $425 Gift Card, Sam's Club is paying you $137 to buy the Phone.
Note: Can not use Gift Card toward payment of device.

Does anyone know how this would work the Sprint Free For a Year plan? I have two phones on that, and it would be great to upgrade them IF it doesn't break the plan.

Not too Sure, might want to check the local Sam's Club. I know from experience the only issues I had are with Business Accounts and "Framily" Plans. You can always stop in and make sure the associate selects "Keep plan the same" and have them cancel if it makes any adjustment.

Not at the moment, but Verizon does have the S7 and S7 edge for $9.98/m or $11.98/m with a $100 Gift Card atm.

thoughts on :

new account
sprint
pay off device
port out

is that possible?

edit: added the fine print ..is a little fuzzy..but it seems to indicate the GC cannot be used in same transaction

Do you have a link because when I go to vzw it says edge is no longer available. Is the deal you're talking about at Sams?

I'm new to Sprint and don't quite have a sense of what works and what doesn't. My husband and I have separate accounts. He's been a Sprint customer for several months and I just joined separately under the free plan. I can't do this myself since I'm not new but I'm too new to be eligible for upgrades.

Could my husband buy this phone as an upgrade on his acct, pay it off, and my daughter then use it on a line on my account?
