I just bought a NIB iPhone SE, 32 GB (Space Gray) for $49 with port in (from AT&T Prepaid) at MetroPCS.

*I signed up for the $30/month plan.
*No activation fee or fee for in store payment were charged.
*I was told this is very YMMV. I bought this in the Boston, MA area.
*OTD for the phone, plan and taxes was $91.44.
*MetroPCS unlocks their devices after 3 months.

https://www.metropcs.com/

Metro iPhone SE automatically unlocked after 90 days.

No call in needed; tested with both Cricket and Vodafone SIMs.

01/13/2018: Per coloradoman, deal is alive again.

$149-$100 with port in = $49.

Not the worst if you can work with metro. Adding the two more months gets me to ~$150 which is similar to the AT&T prepaid deal on cricket... Though with this you would get 3 months of cell service included.

If only my 402 area code would port to metro...

Also, I'm not sure how much I want too be committed to a 4" screen, let alone an iPhone, that long for unlock. I'm pretty skeptical of iPhones, especially the price, but been looking to try one to have a fair experience to share, but it's going to be a huge transition coming from my Z Play. Maybe if I use the Jelly phone (Kickstarter) for a week first, it won't be that bad?

so anyone know about an eBay or online unlock code?

even a $15 code would make this under $100 which is crazy since it's a gsm variant and not sprint

You don't need active service for the full three months, just the first month. After the third month is over, the phone will unlock regardless of whether service is active or not. At least that's how it worked when I did it on a ZTE Zmax Pro last July. I use it at home as a mini tablet.

I share your concern about iPhones. I'm not a huge fan, but I hate large phones and that is unfortunately the direction that all Android device makers are heading in. My favorite phone right now is the Moto E at 4.5 inches simply due to its size. Sadly there isn't anything in the Android mid range that comes close to being that small anymore.

The real trick with Metro is replicating the deal. It's bad enough when it's advertised nationally, but if it's a huge YMMV like this, it's going to be that much worse. I doubt many people will have success.

According to Metro: "Your handset must have had active service for a minimum of ninety (90) consecutive days from the individual phone's activation date."

I grabbed the last one in stock. I was told 6-7 of them were sold over the last couple days. No idea if more were coming in.

The unlock codes I found online were expensive.

I'm planning on paying for another 2 months ($60) and request an unlock from Metro.

Interesting. Thanks for the link. That must be a new requirement. Too many people must have taken advantage of the "free" unlocks before.

This is a good post btw. I just realized my tone maybe seemed negative but I had already given you a thumbs up and rep for posting before I responded. It's just that MetroPCS can be tough to deal with.

Thanks for the post!

Thank you for the point and thumbs up. No, your tone wasn't negative at all.

When I read your post, I was thinking "I'm getting this phone with an unlock for less than $100? YESSSSSSSSSSSS!"

Then I looked up Metro's requirements and saw the three month requirement and thought "Would have been great, but it's still a sweet deal."

Looks like all the carriers have closed their "free" unlock loopholes. Frown

You have to unlock the phone in order for it to work with T-Mobile.

The Metro site shows the 32GB SE for $149, minus $100 for the port in. This phone was $199. In for one! Thanks OP.

No, iPhones cannot be branded by carriers. No splash screens or bloatware.
