Really tempted by this but not sure how much of an upgrade it is over my HD 650. Good deal for mint condition though. Must resist!

Edit: Please put open box in your title OP. Thanks

My friend ordered one. But I really need $549 headphones?
I bought a pair of Sony MDR-V6 headphones about 15 years ago and I made up my mind that I would never listen to a more expensive set of headphones. As far as I know, there is nothing that sounds better than the Sony headphones, so I'm happy. I also don't need an amp for the Sony headphones.

This is a very VERY good deal, couldn't resist. Note the recent +42 FP deal selling these new for $699. $550 mint open-box from reputable authorized reseller with 2 year warranty = no brainer.

Almost as good as last year's B-stock Audeze LCD-2 for $500. (Comparisons between the two anyone?)

Almost as good as last year's B-stock Audeze LCD-2 for $500. (Comparisons between the two anyone?)
Tyll at InnerFidelity compared them to LCD-X:

"Audeze LCD-X - The LCD-X and Elear have more in common in their tonal character than I expected—FWIW, I've gotten side-swiped a few times by the LCD-X; I think it may be a better headphone than I think it is. The LCD-X seems a bit more veiled than the Elear with it's treble registers just a dB or two lower than the Elear, but the LCD-X has pretty clearly better resolution and control of the bass. LCD-X treble seems a tad hazy, while the Elear was resolving but has that little unneeded emphasis at 10kHz. It seems to me the Elear does a better job of transitioning from the midrange to treble, and therefore seems to have a more coherent overall presentation of the music as a whole. Despite the better bass impact and control, the Elear does sound like a more dynamic, punchy, and balanced headphone overall; I prefer it."

The reviews are excellent on these headphones, with many audio sites claiming them to be some of the best, if not the best headphones under $1000. Definitely a dynamic/punchy pair of headphones from everything I've read, but not as wide of a sound-stage as say the flagships such as HD800. As you mentioned, the 2 year warranty is a nice bonus/comfort for open box items.

I figured even if I don't like them, it probably wouldn't be too hard sell them used for at least the same price 6 months down the line.

I grabbed a pair myself and as of now there are 5 left.

Hd 650 or this?
Huge price difference. Massdrop often has HD650s for $200 [massdrop.com], which is an awesome value. My logic was instead of buying a bunch of $200-300 headphones, I'd rather just step up now to a better headphone and keep it for longer (5+ years).

HD600 and 650s are very similar:

"Sennheiser HD 600 - A lot of people are currently making comparisons between the Elear and HD 600. I tend to think that comparison is more about the fact that the HD 600 has been a staple mid-priced headphone among enthusiasts for years, and the Elear is likely to become similarly known. (Yes, I think the definition of "mid-priced" has shifted upwards over the years.) Switching from the Elear to HD 600 has me immediately missing the heft and dynamism of the Elear. The lack of bass extension, the infamous "Sennheiser Veil", and a general impression of decreased resolution have me pretty quickly saying the Elear is easily the better headphone."

The MDR-V6 is not even the best sounding Sony for the price. The 7506 which sells for about the same price, is much more balanced and neutral. The V6 has a v-shaped frequency response (exaggerated bass and treble with a lower level midrange). I own both along with about 10 other headphones that are more expensive, and the MDR-V6 is far from the best sounding.
