Thanks to the OP for getting us Black Friday ads early! Very nice to have more time to ponder.

Thinking about this one for a bit and have concluded that I just do not trust the quality of more complicated products like security camera systems from Harbor Freight. As is, even better know brands and vendors have products which give us significant challenges to configure and setup. I believe most people would be better off purchasing a more expensive but better quality option, and if you're pulling new cables to look for a good PoE system.

FYI - for anyone considering this kit.

A lot of the better branded and more popular products are causing significant effort and time for many of us to setup and configure. Often we have to learn from each other, and thus picking a popular product is useful for finding "crowd sourced" answers.

Thus, considering how complex setup and configuration maybe - I would recommend looking for a deal on a better know brand on something so complex as a security camera system during the Black Friday season.

[ Edit, update 11/2/2017 - Just noticed a better brand for about the same price at Costco coming up for Black Friday -
Night Owl 4 camera coax analog system for 299.99-100 = 199.99
https://slickdeals.net/f/10721552-night-owl-8-channel-3mp-dvr-4-3mp-cameras-at-costco-nov-24-27-2017-black-friday-199-99

Costco has a couple more Black Friday security camera system deals which for only a bit more you get more cameras:
https://slickdeals.net/f/10723740-q-see-8-port-dvr-w-8-wired-1080p-cameras-security-system-costco-com-nov-17-27-2017-black-friday-279-99

While money is not unlimited, I would be looking for a 4 camera system - not sure I would rely on Harbor Freight products though. Which would be a good solid basic surveillance camera system? I'm okay without smart phone monitoring and a local hard drive that could be reviewed should something need to be looked at.

Hi Popeye59

This would be a decent system - $290 now w/discount code ( you need to be a newegg email newsletter subscriber iirc )

Hi Popeye59,

This kit already includes a HDD so you don't have to purchase a HDD separately:

Hi,

You can, and there have been deals posted for coax security camera cables here on SDs.

Example of such a deal:
https://slickdeals.net/f/10680760-100ft-black-premade-bnc-video-power-cable-wire-for-security-camera-for-5-95

You can also buy bulk cable and crimp your own ends.

Note, as a number of people are having challenges with better brands of security camera systems: I would highly recommend avoiding unknown / lesser brands of camera systems as it will be harder to get good customer service as well as find information online to help you configure and use the system.

[ edit, here's an example of a better brand CCTV system - also analog coax BNC: ]

For those looking for a cheap 720p system, this looks like this maybe the lowest price

All your fears about this system are missed placed. These cameras outperform my
Amcrest IPM-723B's, especially the night vision.
The setup instructions are somewhat less than to be desired, but pretty straightforward. The only real trouble I had was getting my smartphone configured to view remotely. The instructions neglected to mention that your username and password cannot be longer than 8 characters.
For $200 you can't beat this system.

Hi Nonyak,

I found MANY deals which beat this during the BF - Cyber Monday period.

FYI - example of a better kit for the price, good if you are on a super tight budget and can not afford a better PoE kit.

OK I got the Cobra 63890 system all hooked up and working fine as a stand alone. I do though want to be able to connect to my computer and download video or pics and review footage separate from the system. I can't get the computer to recognize the files on the hard drive of the surveillance dvr. I set up a USB cable between the two but it is not recognizing it.
I'm trying a cat5 lan cable next.

Hi D-EricH

Did Cobra provide any software for the PC? Sometimes it is not a typical file type the PC recognizes.

Documentation on how to view the file type? Or even what is the file type saved?
