If you are buying this for AM4. Coolermaster charges $7 dollars for shipping you the mounting adapter

Still a good price tho.

Is one markedly better than the other? I think the LED variant is a new design.

Mine shipped with the adapter - most of them do now. It's a great cooler for everyday use and light overclocking.

The LED version is the 212+ while the X is based off the EVO....ie the led has space between the heatpipes while the X does not

Cooler Master is the ONLY company in 30-35 years of dealing with rebates that stiffed me and never sent the rebate. Even Fuji Film sent me a rebate after 1 and a half years that I thought was lost. However, since the Cooler Master rebate was only for $5 I didn't pursue it, but still...

Was thinking about getting this but the rebate thing + Cooler Master makes it quite unappealing.

Of the 2, I would get the X if I needed one.

The 212X is an improved EVO, the LED is a 212Plus HS w/EVO fan (+LED)

Will this be a direct bolt-on for the new 8700k? I don't plan to overclock, and if I did it would be mild. (Still running a 2600k with factory clock, just wanting to get into new hardware). Looks like 6700k/7700k/8700k are all the same socket FCLGA1151. I did read the comment that says AM4 Ryzen chips would need an adapter from coolermaster's website.

Is the 212x the newest (and most efficient) of the choices here? I don't really care about the LED's.

Thanks!

yes the 212X is the most advanced, 8700k has different pinouts electrically but the should have the same mounting holes heatsink-wise
