Rental cars for the month of October in Costa Rica (San Jose Airport) as little as $3 for the week. I booked the car and have been checking back for weeks and still the same price. I did not look at other months. Happy travels

Just a FYI I've done some research on car rentals in Costa Rica and there are mandatory insurances other than the insurance a credit card covers that could be 10x more than the actual rental...i would advise to do some research just saying. The car rental companies wont even tell you then surprised with enormous fees when you get there

Watch out for insurance costs...many agencies will not mention it until you are there in their office

The roads is Costa Rica are not well paved and easy to get in accidents. Muddy slippery roads with the rainforest rain fall make it a torturous combo. I recommend getting a driver to drive you and get you around and cost is minimum if split amongst party you are in.

I visited CR early this year. Great country for a visit. Their hot springs are fantastic.

Beware of rental process via 3rd party travel sites (basically anything that is not directly from the rental company's costa rican website itself). I read up on rental guides before my travel, several of the guides were advising you should rent a car directly via rental company rather than 3rd party travel sites like Orbitz or Expedia. Supposedly there are situations where you reserve a car via 3rd party website and pay online ahead, and rental car company will just tell you they didn't receive any money/reservation at the front desk. You basically would have to make a new reservation on the day of arrival (more expensive this way...) and deal with 3rd party sites for money back after your return. This sounded like a lot of frustration/stress over some savings. I ended up paying extra ($100ish for 4 days) and got a car directly from rental car company.

When I was picking up my car, other customer was super frustrated to be in above explained situation. They rented a car for the whole full week and paid for all insurances ahead (they were screaming over this issue, so I ended up hearing most of their conversation). The rental car company told them they had not received anything and that they will not give them a car unless they pay on the spot. The customers eventually ended up giving fingers to the rental car company and left to other rental company, which was directly next door.

So yeah... please make sure you don't get in situation like that. If you can rent vehicle at above price, it's going to be fantastic deal. Also, make sure you get SUV if you are going to drive anywhere near Monte Verde (rainforest). I personally just visited Arenal volcano area for hot springs during dry season in SUV, but SUV was unnecessary for Arenal volcano.

I went to Costa Rica last year and read a lot of forums on tripadvisor with tales of how car rental companies are a big scam (even the big name companies). A lot of them recommended Vamos. The price is what you see and there are no back end surprises. I went with them and had a great experience. They also provide you with a local cell phone with internet included in the price for use while you are there (if you need it).

Do not fall for the low promotion rate on expedia/Orbitz!
