This has the same storage capacity but it's not the exact same model.

Is one better than the other?

Are these married to their USB?... Answered own question:

>are these able to be opened and then put into laptop as bare drive?

>> No not the WD ones. They have soldered onto the board the USB connector.

Have the reliability of these portable drives, married to a controller, improved? I've been concerned enough to want to be able to remove the drive to try it in a separate case for diagnostics/recovery, in case a controller went bad.

4tb passport is 104.99. Is that a better drive?

passport is probably the best out of all of them. It has hardware encryption i think. But if you don't use it, then there is really no difference between them other than the quality of the drive if any.

Ironically, I needed a new external hard drive for my son's XB1, and Amazon had the WD Passport 4tb for $104.99 and up. However, Prime Now had the 4tb yellow version for $69.99, while it was more than $105 on the regular Amazon site. I was going to post it, but when I went back to copy the link it said no more in stock after my purchase. Even with tax and the "recommended" tip of $7, it came out to $80 with delivery today.

4tb is a lot of data to loose. I still spread out on 2tb drives.

I could be mistaken but it looks like the "Easystore" is an "Elements" in disguise made exclusively for best buy. Prevents price matching most likely. I'd go for the Passport for a longer warranty and $5 cheaper if I needed more portable storage.
