Yeah I know most folks stopped using them when they were bought out by e-bate$ but Fat Wallet will official cease to exist after October 9th. Don't forget to request your cashback if you still have any there.

If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

It's never easy to say goodbye.

I was a FW member first, going back to 2000. Then SD came along as a competing deal site and I joined here too, as my second or third choice along with Anandtech's deal forum which was also big at the time.

Looking back at the history I recall having a preference for FW because it came first, but then Ebay flippers really started to take over their forums, flaunting what they were doing by buying up all the deals. FW did nothing to discourage this, and in fact there was tremendous justification for their behavior.

This led to me and many others to make the jump to SD, which in the early days seemed more friendly to individual deal hunters while FW was becoming the Ebay flipping community. Nobody wants to be on a forum full of trolls and I don't think FW ever recovered from the exodus brought on by that.

Of course now Ebay flippers are a fact of life on the deal forums, but I'd advise SD to ignore the issue at its own peril. Most people still don't like to see deals ruined by these people, and history could easily repeat if the same kind of behavior on the SD forums isn't kept in check.

Before this thread gets any older than it is, I just wanted to comment I finally discovered this reality after attempting to use FatWallet as an alternative reference for a product. I've always been an SD user since back in 2008/2009, as I always prefered the layout and tools that slickdeals has provided. God help me if they ever deactivate the "classic" layout. I've grown permanently attached to it. Anywho, I'm just really surprised that FatWallet folded. I guess they weren't monetizing or getting the traffic figures they once were, or in comparison to SD. I'm most surprised because I know FatWallet always had a dedicated core that would regularly beat identical deal posts on SD, so it will be a loss for both communities if these diehards disengage.

Here is an interesting timeline as documented in Wikipedia.
Shutdown[edit]
On 9/20/2017, Tim Storm posted on his Facebook page the following: "I heard the news today... oh boy. When I sold FatWallet in 2011, I told myself that I sold the right to complain about whatever happened after that. I'm immensely proud of what we built - and sad to hear that it will be shutting down very very soon. I've not been involved at all in the last 6 years, but my heart is with everyone that played a part, either with me, or after me. It was a hell of a ride."[10] Shortly thereafter, a FatWallet employee confirmed that FatWallet owner, Rakuten, would be shutting down the website, but was unable to provide further details.[11]

On 9/22/2017, FatWallet General Manager Ryan Washatka officially confirmed the site will be shutting down, although the timeline is yet to be determined. [12]

On 9/26/2017 Priti Kare, urlhasbeenblocked director of public relations, announces that FatWallet's operations and website will be soon be shuttered. [13]

On 9/27/2017, According to a statement from spokesperson Alessandra Nagy."FatWallet's website will be taken down some time in the next month (October, 2017), Nagy said in an email." [14]

On 10/06/2017, FatWallet sent an email confirming shut-down of its web site on Monday;

"Thank you for shopping FatWallet. With sadness, we must inform you that we will be closing our site on Monday October 9th..."

On 10/9/2017, at approximately 4:00 PM EST (3:00 PM CST in FatWallet Beloit location) the site went offline and began redirecting to urlhasbeenblocked.com

FatWallet.com now has a goodbye message on its domain. [15]

A number of FatWallet users and contributors has moved to a new forum platform, https://phatwalletforums.com/, after the shutdown of FatWallet web site. Some prominent members of the Finance sub-forum started their own forum at https://www.fragiledeal.com/.
