Need microphone to send text alerts

We will be vacating our home shortly to place it on the market and moving out of state while it is still on the market. Our high-end refrigerator has a not-so-high-end "feature". The doors stop/pause before closing, sometimes requiring a human nudge to close it all the way. If the nudge is not provided, a beeper-type alarm rings in 3 minutes.

In the past we have left the house (eg to go to work) for several hours, and left the door "un-nudged" (because we opened the fridge briefly before leaving, then left before the alarm sounded). When we returned, some food had spoiled but more importantly, the fridge had gone into shutoff mode, the bulb staying on had warmed up the fridge, etc.

Now that we won't be around to monitor this on a daily basis, I am concerned a visitor might leave it open by mistake, causing who knows what problematic results. Because our daughter lives in town some miles away, she has agreed to visit the home and shut the fridge IF she knows this is happening -- she can't do it every day on a routine basis.

I thought, if we could set up a microphone to respond to the beep, which then alerts us, that would enable us to close the fridge that day at least.

Can someone recommend a system that would do this?

I think what your talking about is called soft close. If you are moving out to place the home on the market, I assume you won't be there to eat any of the food. Why not just empty the fridge and shut it off?

If for some reason this won't work why not an old fashioned sign saying "Please make sure fridge door is shut". Presumably if someone is seeing the home and opens the door and doesn't close it all the way won't they hear the alarm?

You could get a nest camera... I have a coworker that has one and uses it to watch their house when they are out of town. It has a microphone, etc. and he set it up in about 10 minutes.

Of course, that would also require you to keep your internet active and a modem/router.

Just raise the leg on the fridge increasing the tip so it does close. Most any camera will do motion alerts so you could pick most anything for the alerts.

I'm with LR on this one.. Unplug the fridge (and every other appliance).

Someone I know had a home inspector leave the oven on broil, it remained on for >18 hrs. That was an expensive one for the inspector EEK!

Just empty the fridge and set the controls to turn it off. Better than unplugging imho as the light will still come on if the door is opened.

If you want an alert they way to do it would be with a magnetic sensor on top of the fridge (zwave, wemo, or tied to your alarm system
