I've been looking for a bluray player for my new LG OLED TV and found this open box Sony BDP-BX650 bluray player with 4k upscaling, 3D, streaming, WiFi for $36 after coupon (PCOLUMBUS2017) on eBay -

Sony BDP-BX650 [ebay.com]

The BDP-BX650 is the Costco version of the BDP-S6500. I'm guessing these are store returns to Costco that have been checked and are being sold again.

Please note that this is NOT a 4k bluray player - it only upscales/upconverts the picture to 4k.

Current price for a new BDP-S6500 on Amazon is $88.

Excellent deal. This is a fantastic player and has extra processing power over the lower models to handle apps and streaming faster.

People still pay this much for Blu-ray? I'd rather just get an OPPO if I wanted a quality non-4K Blu-ray player.
This post makes no sense. I did a quick check of OPPO bluray players and the cheapest I could find a new OPPO bluray player was about $275 (without 4k upscaling).

You ask why people pay this much for bluray, but then you propose paying even more.

This Sony bluray player has a lot of features at a very reasonable price for most people. If you want a true 4k bluray player or if you want to go upmarket and get an OPPO, then do so, but don't come in and crap on this thread.

It's funny... You say if you're willing to get an open box, yet you posted a deal for one that's "used-like new" on Rakuten.

Funnier thing is I only see that designation in the top left corner when I'm on the mobile site. When I go to the desktop site, I can't see it. Really odd.

Uh-oh. I purchased this item using a desktop computer, so I didn't see the "used" designation that appears on the mobile site. Since it was such a good price, I searched the desktop listing for anything to suggest that it might not be brand new ("used", "refurb", "recertified"), but nothing turned up. I purchased this bluray player from Rakuten assuming it was brand new. Looks like they'll be getting a return from me.

I'll revise the post above. Since both are not new, it looks like the eBay listing for the Costco version is the better deal at $36 shipped after coupon.

Yeah. I switched to desktop and couldn't see anything either. Not sure if you can take it as gospel, but it would definitely prompt me to email the seller and ask. Also look up both model numbers. I think I was looking for this one before, and when I was googling the costco version, I read people had some issues with it that didn't exist on the non costco model. It's been a little bit so maybe a firmware revision solved the issues.

I'll bet it's used based on the price. The reason I posted the deal was that the price was much lower at Rakuten than anywhere else. I specifically searched the listing to make sure it wasn't a refurb or used before I posted it. I even checked the seller's other items on Rakuten and it seemed like they only sold new merchandise.

Mine has already shipped, so I guess we'll know for sure in a few days. If it's new, I'll keep it, but if it's used, it's going back.

Repped for the research and the information.

Edit: I just sent an email to the seller on Rakuten asking about the condition of these bluray players. I'll let you know what they say.

Edit 2: I just got a response from the seller on Rakuten. He said the units they sell are "used, like new". I assume they are returns. I cancelled my order. My apologies to anyone who placed an order expecting new one from Rakuten (I was).

Edit 3: I just received the BDP-S6500 from Rakuten this afternoon. It's definitely used and I wouldn't call it "used, like new". It's just used with scrapes and scratches. It's in the original box with some of the original packing material. The remote and power cord are present with the bluray player, but nothing else (no manual). This is a disappointment and it will be going back to Rakuten. Once again, I'm sorry if anyone else bought this bluray player from Rakuten expecting a new unit.

Been looking for a Blu-Ray player of good quality, cheap price. I'm no BR snob and rent movies from Redbox maybe once a month or so. Not worth firing up the mostly unused PS4 just for that.

This is a pretty decent deal considering 1 year warranty, 60 days with free shipping should a problem occur. There were cheaper prices for this model on eB*y but with limited warranty and seemingly more "used" according to the description. Seller with 273,103 / 99.6% positive feedback is also a plus. Selling bad stuff and/or not taking care of customers can't get that level of feedback so risk is low. In for one. Thanks!

Is there any reason this is better for playing Blu-rays than a TV that upscales to 4K?
