Insteon is its own communication standard, like zwave or ZigBee. It is dual path, with radio and x10-like powerline signaling. There are insteon modems that will let controllers like Homeseer, ISY, and Vera control Insteon (and X10) devices.

It is super reliable but sole source, meaning everything comes from Insteon, Inc. Like Apple, they have a full scampered of devices, but with limited choice within a product category. I.e. they might have 6 light switches and 2 fan controllers.

I read that it will NOT work with smartthings natively.

Didn't know outdoor plugs existed. I could use one of these for some outdoor string bulbs I have on the deck. Sadly, looks like these require a Insteon hub to work.

GE makes a zwave one that works nicely on ST. We use it for our deck string lights.
