Nest 3rd Generation White/Copper $196.99 10/10/17 Only

Rakuten is offering the white or copper 3rd generation Nest for $196.99 today (10/10/17) only with coupon code GGNEST at checkout ($228.99 before coupon). There have certainly been been similar/better deals over time, however, at the moment this is the best one I've been able to find. Note: check with your power company...if you can get a rebate from them, it would certainly eclipse any deal you'll find. Shipping is free, tax in CA only.

I was under the impression that the learning thermostat can accommodate a C wire, but doesn't require one. Can anyone confirm??

The Nest thermostat can charge it's battery with the heating and cooling wire alone and typically wouldn't require a common wire to do so. There are some issues to where you may need one installed. It will be obvious if you do need one. Mine works fine without a C wire.

There is a very good article in their website, you can find it here: https://nest.com/support/article/...mon-C-wire

TL;DR: If you have the C wire, use it, if you don't have it and you don't have a many zone relay panels, you probably don't need it.

I bought one last night on BBB using 20% off coupon. Price was down to $200 after BBB coupon from RetailMeNot. So essentially the same deal except no tax (excluding CA). This is a better deal for someone living outside CA which saves about ~$20 in taxes. Ofcourse CA residents (with pg&e account) can also apply for $50 rebate. Hope someone finds this useful.

how did you use the 20% off coupon? it says "The manufacturer does not allow coupons on this item" on the item page. Did you do this In-store?

Just a heads up, my nest worked fine without a c wire (previous owner had installed it incorrectly) but it seems to work better with one. We would occasionally get it disconnecting from the internet (not terrible, just annoying) which I think was the device trying to conserve energy while it recharged. It would still work at the device itself, but the app might say it was offline.

One helpful thing is that the nest can charge from a USB device. I would recommend charging it for a little bit before you start it for the first time as it might not have enough power built up when you first start it to get through setup and function. Ours had to trickle charge overnight before we could really use it.
