Emergency nurse here.

Parents bring their kids into the ED for false readings from these types of thermometers all the time.

Stick to a conventional oral thermometer, they're the most accurate.

Edit: For kids not old enough to tolerate an oral thermometer (i.e. < 4yo.), use a rectal thermometer (you can use an oral thermometer as a rectal thermometer but it needs to permanently stay a rectal thermometer).
