Im in the market for a good router, but I'll pass on this one. Good price but no custom firmware support. This router, the R8300, is supposed to be the ugly stepchild that gets no attention compared to the R8500.

Will this provide significant more coverage than my TP Link AC3200?

This router looks really plain.
Everyone knows it is about the look of the router, not the functionality. Got to impress the guests.

Everyone is bashing the router in the comments, yet it has 13 thumbs up. What gives?

I checked out the reviews on Amazon, seems pretty solid and the Linksys version goes for $329. Seems like an early Black Friday to me. Anyone have anything good to say?

Owned it 2 years in my 3 floor townhouse no issues running Verizon Fios 1gig speed straight from OnT via cat5 Ethernet to this router . With devices on my network router prioritized with speed cap settings .

It doesn't look like there is open source firmware available, but is that really worth the extra $140 for the R8500? DDWRT is nice to have, but I'm not sure I can justify the extra $$$.

Depends I guess. Some features provided by custom firmwares such as VPN servers and Ad Blocking are essential and worth the price IMHO.
