I've been contemplating a Vive, but now with a $200 price difference it's a tougher call to make. I wonder if HTC will drop their price again.

This is really tempting, but I just saw that they're going to be launching a new headset called Oculus Go for $199.

Is the Rift still worth buying at this point, or is it better to wait a couple months?

The $199 is basically a gearVR without the need of a phone. The rift is a high end VR system hooked up to your phone.

Pretty sure this does not hook up to your phone.

I haven't been paying close attention to Oculus/Vive due to high price but I assumed they'd have a 2nd gen unit by now. This price is reasonable but I'm gonna wait for $250 to bite.

If HTC sold off their phone hardware business, a much larger potential market than VR, I gotta imagine they are looking to get out of VR as well. Maybe that's not a bad thing if a deep pocketed company like Google or Amazon buys the business, still it makes me wary of buying a Vive now.

That's kind of silly. Vive is partnered with Steam and has a superior product that doesn't require buying extras. Rift is cheaper because its an inferior product.

Thanks, it looks like the Rift is still a good choice then.

This deal also stacks with the Amazon 20% off with MR points deal. It makes the Rift $350+tax on Amazon.

Not silly at all, there were earlier reports of HTC trying to sell their phone and vive units, the next month they sold the phone unit so vive could be next. This isn't about the technical merits of the Vive, that doesn't matter, HTC could still be looking to sell it off.

Rift controllers are better and the Rift can basically run most of the apps on Steam anyway.

New gen hardware coming out soon. Plus there are still zero AAA games. Everything is just tech demos.
